Nappy rash

Has anyone used Cavilon spray for nappy rash? Having tried a plethora of creams and ointments nothing seems to be shifting it. This is with 6+ hours of air time a day! Currently using Daktacort three times a day but minimal improvement. Also just eating bland foods and avoiding dairy as DD is having thin oily poos very frequently. Otherwise feeding well and happy except when I touch the rash. She’s 10 weeks (5 weeks early)and EBF.
Internet research suggests Cavilon spray could Be worth a try - anyone used it? Do you just apply the spray or is it used in conjunction with a cream?

Cavilon stings when applied to broken or irritated skin. Wouldn't have thought it was suitable for nappy rash. Happy to be proved wrong

We use cavlon in hospital to guard against pressure sores.

Second PP, it is a bit painful on broken skin. Is there a baby friendly one?

We used metanium. Don't know if that was one of the ointments you've tried. Was a godsend for us. DD2 had open sores from nappy rash and it helped clear it right up.

The other thing I found really helped was instead of using wipes or water I used cold chamomile tea to clean their wee bums at nappy changes when the rashes flared up. I used to make a big bottle up each day and pour what I needed into a wee bowl at each nappy change.

Hi OP. Warm water and cotton wool only and dry with a muslin afterwards. Keep the area as dry as possible. Metanium is the only thing that has even worked for us. However I think the secret is to apply a very very thin layer. Too much cream affects nappy absorbency and keeps the area damp and make it worse. I avoid barrier creams for this reason.

What nappies are you using OP? Could it be worth trying a different brand or even cloth?

Exactly what @minnie465 said. Metanium was the only thing thay worked for us. I would use it on its own though - very thin layer. Keep things simple. No wipes. Cotton wool & water and lots of air time (which it sounds like you're doing).
I also used Bepathan barrier cream but only when metanium had done its job by calming it down.

I do think it’s something I’m eating and passing on to her because the rash is only in there immediate anal area. Because she poos so frequently it is difficult to keep it dry - and I think by poking around in there I stimulate her to poo more! Part of me thinks it’s also something that will be helped by her digestive system maturing with age.
At my wits end of it hit, it’s heartbreaking!

Just thinking it’s been two weeks since vaccines and her poo has been watery / oily since then. She’s gaining weight well. But could the acidic poo be a result of the vaccine?

Try adding fleece into nappies. Its what most reuseable nappies have as pee goes through and leaves them dry. You could just add fleece liners to disposable for now and try.

Also dry with muslin well after each change. I would just use a facecloth with plain water to wash

You said you’ve cut out dairy as you feel it’s something you’re eating that is being passed on. Could she have a dairy allergy (CMPA)? Strange poo and persistent nappy rash can be a sign

Cavillion is amazing. AMAZING. My mum was in a hospice receiving end of life care and had bedsores. Was in agony. This sorted them out. The nurse knew I had a little one and commented that if DD ever had nappy rash and nothing else would shift it I should try it. A few months later DD had an ear infection and the most disgusting poop causing evil nappy rash like nothing we’d ever known. She was sobbing in pain, would literally shake at every nappy change and non of the usual treatments (metanium, coconut oil, Lansing, egg whites etc) even came close to touching it. All great for mild rashes but when it’s severe they are hard to shift. Cavilion had it 50% better by the next day and all but gone in 2 days.
It’s not cheap but you really don’t use much of it. You literally just spray over the affected area when the skin is clean and dry. Don’t use anything else alongside. Wait for a minute or two to dry and nappy back on.
It was a game changer for us xx

@Hartleyhare1206 Thanks for explaining how the Cavilon is used. I’ve got some coming tomorrow. How often do you need to reapply it? Do you wash it off at each nappy change?

It’s pretty waterproof from what I remember I think it only came off in the bath... that said whilst the nappy rash is at its worst I probably wouldn’t take any chances and might reapply more often for a day or two just to get on top of it.
Also don’t use wetwipes. It’ll sting and be rough...I used coconut oil and cotton wool, patted dry with a Muslin and then left the air to get it properly dry for a while before putting the spray on.
Honestly it’s the only thing that worked when we were utterly at the end of our tether with it all and had exhausted every other treatment - be it medicinal or old wives tale - my husband used to call it miracle in a bottle!
Ps - I’m not on their payroll honest! I was just so relieved to find something that helped DD when she was in such agony that I now sing about it from the roof tops!

OP we have used cavilon spray and found it very effective. The only other thing that would shift ds's nappy rash was timodene, prescribed by the doctor. If you havent tried that, it's worth a go.

Spoke with the GP again this morning. Been prescribed timodene to use thrice daily, metanium in between. Then at night when she is in a nappy blob sudocrem over the affected area. GP wants to say that the oily poo is due to DD lying in her happy overnight and the oily barrier cream absorbing into her anus.

I asked about the Cavilon but they advised against it, said it’s too harsh for baby’s bum - although 3M (the manufacturers) say it can be used. Don’t know what to do now, I just want it sorted as fast as possible.

Well if it helps my gp and HV both said it was ok and I used it on and off for over a year, but you must do what feels right for you xxxx

@katmarie we’ve got the Timodine prescription now, did you use this in conjunction with the cavilon?
