Smells like a hamster cage

Ok so i had conquered the night nappy world and have not had a soggy babe for some time - am i asking to much for a non stinky one? The last two mornings ds room has stank like a hamster cage from his night nappy - my dh reckond no wonder he wakes early as his nostrils are probably burning with the pong. A fair point perhaps. Does anyone have a solution ...... The 'd' word was mentioned for overnight by dh and although i could threaten dh with another 'd' word its possibly a bit extreme.

What do you wash them in, is he teething, and is this with wool, fleece or pul?

Wool should smell less.

Possibly use a smidge less powder? If he is teething too it will make his nappies smell even worse. What are you stuffing with too? Microfibre always smells worse.

nappyzone · 23/09/2007 18:48

i had two microfibre inserts in there last night - i will give all the night ones a extra whirl through the washer tomorow - tonight he has gone in a sposie .

have recently given all mine a blast thru at 60 with some tea tree drops in conditioner drawer bit, vinegar in there too, and still the half dose of non-bio... they all seem to smell a lot fresher for it.
dunno if that will help?

nappyzone · 23/09/2007 21:51

i will give it a go tomorow - just had an epic hr trying to catch guinea pigs so mind not on the job! i suppose the night ones do take more hammer and long term pee contact.

Breadsoda in the prewash is what I have found best for smells. Better than vinegar for me.

claireybee · 24/09/2007 17:21

Mine always smell worse when i stay at my mums and use her persil to wash them (we only have asda own!)-maybe try a different detergent cos the wee does seem to react with persil. Have had a few nostril burning night nappies recently and she has woken then settled straight back down after a change but pretty sure is teething related.

DD's nappies were all looking dingy and smelling a bit stale (and her usual teething rash wasnt clearing up) so i did a one off soak of the lot (used the bath as no bucket big enough for all my nappies, wipes and liners)then did a 60 degree wash. They are much brighter now and smell much less so maybe they had a wee build up?!

curlywurlycremeegg · 24/09/2007 17:41

Yes DD's morning nappies can burn your nostrils and we use persil non bio, will try another brand when we get through the huge pile we have left!

nappyzone · 24/09/2007 19:15

hmm - we have just had the biggest box of it delivered on sat so a while to go lol!! to be honest i went to asdas own for a few weeks and i didnt feel as though it was doing a good enough job on our clothes so switched back to persil - i will monitor tonights - were in a jiant with a hemp and a microfibre booster all in wool so lets just see.......

soapnuts for nappies - no powder to build up residue, sunlight bleaches stains so you don't need stain tackling power (and at the end of the day, they are nappies, they are meant to be pooed in)

curlywurlycremeegg · 24/09/2007 20:59

I know, I know, just never get round to placing my order for them, was going to get some of the soap nuts liquid stuff also and make my own shower gel, wow I have lentil weverish tendencies

Flamesparrow · 24/09/2007 21:32

getting a tad too carried away there

nappyzone · 24/09/2007 22:16

lol - really? oh dear - im such a bad person in comparison.

Yeah I know what you mean about the cleaning power of Asda own-I'll be trying another one when we get through the huge box we have of that! But at least the nappies don't smell as bad with that as they do with persil!
