Tips on self soothing

Hi, was wondering if anyone had any tips for getting DS back to sleep when he wakes crying. He is 4 months, and seems to wake early in the morning crying (often similar time). I knows he’s not hungry or needing a change, and can often pat him back to sleep, but would ideally like him to learn to self sooth so it doesn’t become a routine (although it may already be one). He has always done this, so don’t think it’s the dreaded 4 month sleep regression. He sleeps with white noise, and when he grumbles at night (before we go to bed ourselves) it’s around 50/50 as to whether it’s a grumble and then back to sleep, or a grumble that turns into a cry and therefore needs patting. We usually try to leave for a few minutes to see if he can calm himself down.
