When did your LO walk?

Sorry if this has been done to death.

My daughter is 14 months old and, it appears, no where near walking. She can pull herself up, can stand unaided for about 5 seconds, and crawls very well, however she has no interest at all in taking any 'steps'. She doesn't cruise around the furniture, and if she pulls herself up on something just stays there and kind of bobs up and down. She'll walk a few steps aided but then loses all interest and sits down on her bum.

I'm not exactly worried, but I am finding it a bit weird that so many of my mum friends have walking babies but mine is not interested, and to be honest she's an absolutely lump and I'm sick of carrying her around!

DD1- 13 months. Went from zero to running pretty much in one day day.

DD2- 12 months. She crawled at 5 months, pulling up and cruising at 7 months (plus climbing) but showed no interest in walking until we took her to the beach and she wasn't a fan of the sand!

Enjoy the days where you can put them down and they stay there.

DS1 was 19 months. He never crawled, bum shuffled instead. We didn’t get him checked out at all because we could tell there wasn’t anything wrong. Just took his time. He’s 8 now and not sporty at all, not a fan of any exercise. He’s just not a physical kid!

DS2 is the opposite. Walking the week after he turned 1. He’s 3 now and very physical. Sporty. Climbs on everything.

They all do things at their own speed!

As in, took their first steps staggering across a room, rather than confidently walking everywhere ?

dc1 14months
dc2 10months
dc3 11months

None of them have turned into great sporting stars or anything though Grin There's no correlation between when they start walking and physical prowess as they get older.

My lovely God daughter ? 26months Grin. No physical issues they could find, and nothing during her childhood, teens, or into adulthood.

No-one involved in early child development / milestones would have any concerns before the child is about 18months

DS is 16 months and has just begun walking. He still crawls most places though. He can manage around 10 steps before falling now.

Crawling at 10m 2w and walking at 15m to the day.

She showed no inclination to do either until she just did them one day. Then there was no hesitation, we think she'd been practising in secret.

She could climb up her slide independently for over a month before she could walk... including up the wrong way.

I have children at both ends of the spectrum, one at 9 months one at 18 months and the others somewhere in between.

My later ones were bum shufflers.

DH is 14 months and is walking from one room to another, also crawling too, still falls on his bum too. Your DC seems to be heading in the right direction and as you said there's a wide scope so I wouldn't be worried at all

DD1 - 9 months
DD2 - 10 months
DD3 - tbc

There's a huge age range that's considered normal. Lots of people have on or around the 1st birthday as the norm but in reality it can be earlier and much later than this. Do you have anything to encourage walking? Something she can push.
Can I just add, DD1 even though she could walk for a long time she used to hate walking in public and demand a pick up so your arms might not get a rest even when she can walk unfortunately.

Just over 18 months. Before then there were no signs at all.

Now he's 22 months and is a very confident walker. He runs everywhere and can walk quite far outside to the extent that he hardly needs his stroller anymore.

Also my friend didn't walk at all until 2 and is one of the most successful adults I know now.

Anything up to 18 months is considered normal. The HV may make a referral after that point if it looks like they aren’t even close to walking - but as your daughter can support herself and stand, I think she’ll do it eventually.

DS1 was 16 months, DS2 14 months.

I think the one year old thing is such a myth! They also hardly any of them can talk at one, most can't talk until more like 2.5-3. DS2 is putting 2-3 words together at 21 months but that seems unusually early, I am sure DS1 was just saying single words at this age.

And YY it takes at least 6 weeks, sometimes longer for them to go from first independent steps to actually able to let them walk around 90% of the time because it takes them a while to get steady.

My son started walking about 1 week after his 1st birthday. I was walking at 9 months apparently, yet on the other hand my mil says that my DH didn't walk until he was about 15 months.

All little ones are different, and unless you have any other concerns I really would worry yet.
She'll do it when you least expect it!

Also, I saw DS1 walk three steps at 10 months but he didn't realise that he'd done it and didn't try again until 16 months, and then it took him quite a long time to choose walking as his default option - for a while he would only walk when he wanted to carry something so his hands were too full to crawl! Whereas DS2 once he knew he could stand, he would try it all the time just for the fun of it and when he first started walking he would stagger across the room screeching with laughter at the sheer thrill of it.

DS1 is a perfectionist and doesn't like to do things until he is completely sure he will be good at them and they will be enjoyable; DS2 is more of a devil may care, ooooh what does this button do sort of personality.

Some babies just take a bit longer. My friends baby/child was nearly 2 and a half before he started walking - by this time he had been to various medical professionals and there was nothing physically wrong. He got there in the end. Obviously he is the higher end of the scale, but it's not unusual for children to be 18 months or older before walking.

DC1 was 18m and went straight to running about and being very sure on their feet. DC2 was 15 months and was a bit more 'toddling'

Dd1 didnt move at all until 15 months, then bum shuffled. Never cruised, eventually walked if you held both her hands and basically pushed her forward at 20 months. Started walking a week after her 2nd birthday.

Dd2 crawled at 8 months, started cruising at 12 months, took her first independent steps at 17 months.

@ComeOnEileen11 22 months?? Were there any developmental issues or did they just not fancy walking?

14 months but had shown very little interest in even standing unaided and not much interest in walking even holding hands etc. She literally stood unaided for the first time on the Monday, took her first steps on Wednesday, was properly walking by the following Monday. She had been cruising a lot around furniture though.
