Toddler DS confused by the colour yellow

Hi all,

I'm hoping you can help me with some concerns I'm having. DS is nearly 2 and knows his colours well except yellow. Every time I ask him what colour something yellow is he says either green or purple, I first noticed this about 2 months ago.

It's starting to worry me because he just chucked two books on the floor when we came to something yellow and I asked him what the colour was. These are his favourites (Stanley) and he will read all of them in a row without issue, this has never happened before and I think the colour issue is stressing him out.

Should I carry on pointing out yellow objects or just leave it for a bit? I don't think it's a colour blindness issue because he has no issue identifying red, purple, blue, green or orange.

Tia

Id leave it a while and come back to it. Hes clearly irritated by it.

On a side note, can he actually say the word? Is he getting annoyed by not being able to wrap his tongue around the sound of the word?

Thanks @Letsallscreamatthesistene he can say the word and will when I prompt him but he can't identify other colour as yellow IYSWIM

My 3 year old is a bit behind and has just recently learned her colours but she's confused with blue. She can name all the colours but like your son will say a random colour instead of blue. No problems with any other colour.

My dd told me everything was blue until she was 3. I know she knew they weren't, she even correctly named them with my parents. I just stopped asking her.

Thanks all, I think I was worried over nothing.

It won't be colour blindness. Maybe he's just getting irritated that every time he reads a book there's a question and answer session on colours?!
If he can identify all the others you really don't have to keep asking.

I’d leave it as it’s irritating him.
Eventually I’d probably be really busy and ask him to do you a favour. “Oh DS I’ve got my hands full can you get me the yellow peg/mug/car?”

Colours are complex to learn because you can have for example a yellow and a green shade that are more similar than lime green and dark green. It really doesn't matter at 2 if a child doesn't know any colours. Just aim to mention naturally and don't make him repeat it e.g. 'do you want the yellow cup' holding it up.
