Is my newborn sleeping too much?

Okay, this may sound ridiculous to some, but I’m genuinely wondering if my LO (5 weeks old) is sleeping too much today?

He’s normally quite active during the morning and early afternoon, albeit in a fractious kind of way. But today he has gone straight back to sleep after all his daytime feeds (which hardly ever happens!) and is asleep now. When he has been awake he’s been active - not drowsy - and seems happy enough, kicking his legs and arms on his mat. He’s done regular wet nappies and a poo.

Is the sleeping thing normal or could there be something wrong? Given that he’s slept for most of the day, do I need to brace myself for him to be up all night? He’s normally been quite good at sleeping during the night but I know that could change...

No! That's perfectly normal at that age!

No its quite normal. He is probably having a growth spurt or developmental leap. It wont necessarily affect night time sleep.

Normal. Mine is ten weeks. Some days are just sleepier. Once or twice I’ll admit to neurotically waking to feed...

Yes, I remember in the early weeks and months she would just throw us the occasional 'sleepy day' to keep us on our toes!

I also remember being worried and googling it because it was very much not her usual state. Alas, the sleepiness didn't last and she always returned to her normal fractious, unsettled modus operandi.

Normal for newborns to sleep loads.

My brother used to sleep 10 hours non-stop for 3 months since he was born. He had to be woken to eat, then went straight back to sleep. Unbelievable, but there, some babies are just great like that :)

(Former childminder here) OP, please don't worry all ladies here have been spot on. Sometimes baby's sleep loads and sometimes they don't. Many years since I actually had my own but when they first slept all night I sat up near to tears rocking the crib and touching her just to make sure she was OK.
Come back if you need to, the ladies with baby advice are usually a great source of info and very helpful, Congratulations on your LO. Little tip try and have a little nap while baby is asleep. 💐
