My dd turned 1 at the end of August and is 50th centile (more or less) for height and weight. What size (age) winter clothes would you buy for her?

Depends - some brands come up bigger than others! Probably 18-24 months with sleeves and trousers rolled up!! If she's a very slim jim, I would make sure that the trousers have an adjustable waist or drop down to 12-18 months.

fingerwoman · 21/09/2007 13:38

yes, totally depends where you buy and what shape your dd is.
I'd have said 12-18

LizaRose · 21/09/2007 14:22

Well, I got 12-18 month clothes from Woolies and they are beyond huge! I had to take them back and swap for 9-12 month, which are still generous. Then I realised that their definition of 9-12m is up to 11kg (24lb), which the average (50th centile) girl reaches at just after 18 months. Does that make sense to anyone?

yes, my dd is almost 4 and still in mainly age 2 clothes. She is quite tall and growing upwards but not outwards and most trousers that fit her in length just fall down

EmmaJW1976 · 21/09/2007 15:46

My DS2 is 3.5 and he is just in age 2-3 clothes and he's no smaller than other kids his age! My friend's son is almost 4 and in 18-24 months still and he doesn't seem particularly small!

My DS1 is 8 and is now in 7-8 clothes but this is the first time ever he has had clothes with his own age in size!

lailasmum · 21/09/2007 15:52

My 3year old is incredibly skinny but really tall so its hard to find stuff that fits, I tend to buy 4-5 years stuff for her at the moment for the length and then take it all in but trousers are a nightmare as she needs the length but is really skinny so everything falls down, I make her a lot of stuff but have found that Gap and Keedo are best for tall skinny kids. Think sometimes height/weight are better to go off than age.I found that woolworths and tesco and most of the main high street brands make clothes really wide and short.

castille · 21/09/2007 15:57

Same here - my 14-month-old averaged-size DS is mostly in 9-12 month clothes because the 12-18 things I bought were comically vast. If you're buying things from Vertbaudet/La Redoute or other French makes, buy bigger though (18 months), as they come up loads smaller than UK brands.

depends, at this age DS was in some 9-12's some 12-18's, he's always had short little legs thou. alos depends on the shop.

this week I got him 4 tops from primark and all 4 were differnt sizes (same but differnt cuts iycwim)

liza - the woolies set I got for DS was 9-12 months but was fine until he was about 15 months. (even then it was cos of his poppers coming undone.)

MrsBadger · 22/09/2007 21:37

it is madness
I have been keeping track of what fits dd and there is barely any correlation between her age/weight and the size on the label.
Adams stuff always seemed to come up enormous, Tesco babygrows were tiny...

clothes sizes are crap and it goes on through life doesn't it? my 22 month old is still able to wear one pair of trouser that are sized for a 3-6month old baby. i also have a size 10 top that is bigger than one of mysize 16 ones.it's hit and miss.i hate clothes shopping!!!!!!

Tommy · 22/09/2007 21:55

you just have to shop around and eventually you know which sizes they are in each shop.
DS1 was always one size above his age and DS2 always spot on.

However, DS1 (5.8) now wears age 7-8 tops and is still wearing a pair of 3-4 shorts as he is really skinny but very tall!

faylisa · 22/09/2007 22:01

It drives me mad - my DD age 2 has clothes that range in size from 12-18 months to age 3.

Wallace · 22/09/2007 22:02

Well ds2 is almost 14 months (97th percentile I think) and wears anything from a 3-6 month t-shirt form next up to age 2 dungarees, so who knows!
