Stair gate advice

Just starting to look at stairgate options and like the idea of the retractable mesh ones as we have a very narrow hall and minimal space top and bottom of stairs for traditional gate.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

I assume say you had a gate that extends to 1m and only a 80cm space the fabric locks so it doesnt extend any further and they could fall through the gap created at the bottom?

Hi,

I'm not sure about the mesh ones (although we do have one covering our "exciting" [never used] fire place) but we've got a Baby Dan fold up gate on our kitchen door which is amazing. It feels more sturdy than a mesh gate as my baby (he's 15 months) stands up and leans against the gate to peer over the top, and I feel he's "safer" pushing against plastic slats than he is against a bit of mesh, but maybe I'm wrong!

I've just had a look at our mesh gate and it looks like the length is at the edge (outside of the mesh bit) so you don't get any extra mesh, just more of a gap at the side. It could be different in different makes though. The Baby Dan one has extra panels that you can slot in as required and then we've also got more traditional door style gates on our stairs where the frame is in two bits and you screw it together at the right size.
