Baby ear to shoulder - worried

Teacher2019 · 24/05/2020 17:37

My daughter is 7 months old and for the past few days she has begun to shrug her shoulds and bring her head/ear to her shoulder. I notice it mainly when I'm feeding her on high chair.

Anyone else experience this?

I googled and now I'm really worrying..

Our DD did this on and off and we always took it as a sign of her teeth moving/irritating her. Haven't seen her do it in a long time but she has most of her teeth.

Thank you @Wale90.

That makes me feel better.

Was worried about epilepsy.. infantile spasms.

I will try and take a video for gp but it just happens so sudden

Teething or an ear infection would be my first thought

I had totally forgot she used to do it but I'm pretty sure its normal. If her ear is weeping or she's in discomfort it could be an ear infection though.

GrumpySausage · 24/05/2020 18:16

My DS used to do this when his teeth were bothering him.

My youngest has recently gone through a phase of putting her ear to her shoulder, she’s just turned 1 and as far as we can tell it’s just because the world looks different sideways and it’s amusing. If your dd isn’t distressed she might just have realised she can do a new thing.

nervousnelly8 · 24/05/2020 18:27

DS used to do this about that age. He also used to shake his head. I read up online and convinced myself he was going to develop all manner of things. His first tooth came through a couple of days after I first noticed it!

HavelockVetinari · 24/05/2020 18:27

DS did this when he had an ear infection.

Since it's been a few days I'd take her to the GP on Tuesday if it persists.

Thank you for the replies!

Will arrange a gp app tomorrow and get it checked out! Hoping its teething

Let us know how it goes.

Ftmy2019 · 25/05/2020 23:25

@HavelockVetinari so she kind of stopped doing it :/ I'm just going to monitor it tomorrow. She only did it once today during feeding time. I couldn't book app for today but have for tomorrow.

Hey I know this is old and I hope you’re still on here

but my 9 month old does the exact same. She brings her shoulders up like she’s shrugging but only when she’s eat food/in her high chair.
could it be her teeth or indigestion etc?

Hello any feedback on this?

DadDuties · 22/07/2025 22:03

My 8.5 months son has been doing this shoulder shrug and head tilt to one shoulder or the other for the past couple of weeks. Some old posts here have pointed to teething or ear infection, however neither applies to him. He does this at random times and mostly when he’s sitting up, or when we’re holding him upright. We’ve read a lot about infantile spasm, could this be IS?
