3 month old keeps waking at 4am

Hi, my 3 month old DS keeps waking up at 4-6am fidgeting like mad, making loads of noises. I did think he was hungry and I’d do him a bottle but he’d only have 10ml then refuse it. So I figured he’s not even hungry but just fidgeting. I put his dummy in and he just spits it out and carries on with the noises.

He usually wakes properly and wants a feed at 6am. But I can’t get back to sleep because of the fidgeting and find myself waiting round till he wakes properly!

I mean, I do get a bit of cleaning time in but I think I’d rather the sleep.

Have any ideas? Thanks in advance x

Is the room quite light? Sunrise is before 5am these days so that could disturb him.

My god, I relate. My baby is the most fidgety little man, he'll be just nodding off and he'll start wriggling and wake himself up. Annoying!

It could be the light, or also the sound of birds? Perhaps try some white noise to drown it out, especially if no feed is necessary

It has been very warm. Do you offer him a little water? Maybe he is just thirsty?

Don't worry, it's just a phase. Next week it'll be something different!

My HV and midwife both told me no water

My dd was the same at that age. It's the coldest part of the night. Also loudest with the birds. Do you have white noise playing?

Mine always woke at that time due to wind. And possibly light?

Solved it by bringing him just into our bed (just outside his snuzpod so not much further than where he would sleep anyway!) and it solved the waking up. Slept in the way they say to safe sleep just from that time onwards x

I find that lightly holding his hands on his tummy helps (almost like a swaddle I suppose), he likes it and it’s easy enough (although he hates actually being swaddled)! I have a next to me, obv couldn’t do it in a normal cot!

@endofthelinefinally baby is only 3 months old! They can't have water until 6 months at the earliest - please be very careful when you give out advice that you're not making dangerous suggestions.

I don't have a link, just what i was advised by my midwife and HV, and my doctor parents! Generally speaking, babies under 6 months don't need anything but milk except in very special cases. Their stomachs are so small, water fills them up but doesn't have any calories so would pretty much do more harm than good.

Water in young babies is dangerous because it can easily create an electrolyte imbalance, as it effects sodium levels.

DS is 6 months and recently had been waking earlier and earlier, we made the room darker and he's back to 7:30/8:00. Might be worth a go.

This morning he was the same and I held his hand for about 10 mins and put his dummy in and he went off to sleep again til 6.30am
