Ideas for 2 year old birthday

Hi all,

My son will be 2 in a few months time. We don't plan to have a party or anything like that (even if we are allowed to) but I would like to get him some new bits and bobs. I know I know he doesn't really care he's too young to understand etc but I would still like to get him some toys/games. Preferably stuff that will last a while. Does anyone have any suggestions for both bigger stuff and smaller stuff?

He has a toy kitchen already. A water table. Has some play doh. Generic puzzles etc

a rocking horse for a big present, maybe a personalised book and a bubble machine?

Is he into trains? Easy to keep adding bits to a basic set in later years.

My DD will be 2 in August and a scooter is likely what we will be getting her.

Groupon have some wooden play food items. We have a toy kitchen and we’ve added a lot to it over a few birthdays and Christmases. My son also loves his toot toot cars and tracks. Lots of options for building that up as well. Or he might like a balance bike.

Our DS was 2 around Christmas so we had to come up with lots of ideas then (grandparents wanted guidance too)!

We’ve started a train set, as someone mentioned. He also now has a growing collection of Thomas and Friends character trains which go along the tracks, as well as an electric one that pulls/pushes them all along. You can even get tunnels that make the train make a noise/stop/turn, with Brio.

Hot Wheels cars/track are popular here, but need adult support. John Lewis have a lovely collection of wooden toys, which beats all the plastic tat you often see. BUT we do have a whole kitchen set (plates, cutlery etc) and food, which we use for “tea parties”.

Now he’s almost 2y4m and I recently bought more advanced books - Stick man, Paddington Bear etc, and we’re getting good mileage out of those.

I got mine a lovely book case from great little trading. I bought it to organise his books so a nice piece of furniture for me really but he really loves going through his books and choosing what to read

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. He is into trains but (and this may sound a stupid question) where do you keep the track? Do you keep it permanently assembled or pack it up and build it again each time? We don't have a very big house so I'm not sure where we would keep it!

Love the idea of a balance bike or scooter I think I will get him some more wooden cutting food too and yes he absolutely loves us reading the Julia Donaldson books.

Get the leap frog ice cream cart. Seriously fun. My friend has it for her kids and I desperately want one but I am on a toy ban. All the kids fight over it, it's great!

We have an old Fortnum and Mason hamper that we keep the train tracks in (fancy 😂). We might build it in the morning and keep it out for the day, but generally it goes away pretty quickly. The box is good, it houses various other vehicles and assorted related bits like traffic lights and whatnot. We also got one of those felt “town maps” to “drive” around.
