What age did your baby learn to use a spoon?

Hello,

Baby is 9.5 months. She eats well - I have done a mix of purées and finger foods, she eats a wide range and after a shaky start with weaning she now generally eats everything I give her.

She can use a spoon with a bit of guidance if I lightly hold her hand and let her scoop food. A bit messy but she is starting to get it! Then other times she has no interest, she doesn't want to hold the spoon or just bashes it around.

I am not too worried about it but just curious at what age others DC learned to use a spoon by themselves?

A lot lot lot older than that!

Oh yeah I'm certainly not worried that she should be doing it yet, just curious....

My DD is 18 months - she picks up the spoon, removes it from her plate (as if it is poisonous) then puts it as far away from her as possible on the table. She eats her dinner with her hands before letting me know she is finished by putting the spoon back on her plate.

I really wouldn't worry about it 🙂

@Quail15 ha ha sounds about right! I'm really not worried, just interested in what ages babies do things... my DD shows some signs of wanting to do it, sometimes she will grab the spoon and try and scoop food, which like I say she can do if I hold her hand lightly. But she is also just as likely to grab the bowl and spoon and throw them hard on the floor so I'm not reading too much into that! 😂

My daughter is 13m and likes to use the spoon herself. She gets very cross if I try to help. She is perfectly able to get it to her mouth, but loading it is not quite happening yet.lots of dipping the wrong end in and putting an empty spoon in her mouth 😂

@modgepodge sounds like she is well on her way to getting it!

A couple of times I took my hand away and let her try and load it, just to see what would happen ... she kind of stabs at the bowl and smacks the spoon in the food... the mess is unreal 😂
