A few questions about bottles, sterilising & winding...

Just a couple of questions if someone is kind enough to give me some answers...

  1. How do/did you sterilise your babies bottles/dummies?
  2. When do/did you stop sterilising bottles/dummies?
  3. What age did you stop winding your baby? (Formula fed babies only)

I bought the Nuby steriliser that sterilises and dries - great purchase
I'm still sterilising my babies bottles now and he is 7 months, I just assumed you do it until they no longer use bottles?
Same as above I assumed he will need winding as long as he is drinking from bottles x

Some need winding more than others. My current baby brings it up on his own of you sit him upright and has done this since being born pretty much.

  1. I used a milton cold water steriliser, a bit old fashioned but it was brilliant, no faff,
  1. I stopped at 12 months when they no longer had formula.
  1. No set age, I kind of just knew when to stop, instinct I guess!

We had the Phillips electric Steriliser so popped the dummies in with the bottles.

Bottles sterilised till he stopped having formula at 1. Dummies probably just washed from about 9mo when he started crawling and eating everything he found on the floor.

I can't remember when we stopped winding, probably about 9mo - they just learn to burp themselves at some point! Made feeds a lot quicker!

I have used cold water sterilisers. (an icecream box and tabs very cheap.) A steam steriliser and in microwave. Less comfortable use the latter.
Stopped sterilising at about 1 year for bottles. But a bit earlier for cups and bowls.
Neither of mine were windy and both were bf so only ever winded if given a bottle. And not past 6 months.

  1. Avent microwave steriliser
  1. When we stopped using them
  1. Can't remember, think around time he could sit up?

I had an electric steam steriliser. Chucked everything in there. Honestly, I stopped sterilising everything other than bottles for my eldest at six months, carried on with bottles until a year. With my youngest, I stopped sterilising completely before a year.

Winding is a complicated one. Both my DS had reflux, which meant I had to keep them upright for as long as physically possible after a feed. Usually I put them sitting up over my shoulder or chest to chest for about an hour after a feed. So I wasn't winding them, but I wasn't just putting them back down in bed after a feed.

  1. Phillips Avent Steam Steriliser. Love it, you just load the things in there and press a button.

  2. I assume you sterilise as long as your using the bottles. Like other people say with dummies though, if the kid is crawling around the floor and putting things in his mouth, sterilising dummies seem a bit pointless.

  3. I think they grow out of needing to be winded. Either they get strong enough to force the wind out themselves, or they get a bit less windy.
