Babies Weight

Morning Everyone

My baby was born on the 95th centile. At his 6 week check he measured on the 90th centile, but his length and head circumference are on the 50th centile. So my question is;

Should i be concerned that his weight has dropped a bit?
Or should I expect his weight to drop a bit considering the rest of him is on the 50th centile?

Thank you for reading!

Speak to your HV.

Yeah, I will. i have the 6-8 week phone call check up tomorrow.

I was more asking to see if anyone has any experience of it....

My DD was born in the 75th and drifted Dow to the 50th where she's more or less stayed, she's in high school now and still around the 50th.

As long as he's bright and alert at times, producing enough wet nappies and is meeting his milestones, I wouldn't really worry Smile

My DS did drop down but not for a few months and I had to get him weighed every week until it went back up, which it did.
Don't worry too much. It's good you can speak to someone tomorrow. How much weight has he lost? Sometimes those charts are a bloody faff. No two babies are the same!

I have heard that babies sometimes drop down a little bit before their weight settles, but definitely ask your health visitor. I wouldn't worry too much. No one has ever measured my DDs length and she hasn't been weighed since her 6 week check up (she's 3 months now). She seems happy enough has all the lovely baby chub so I'm not worried Smile

My DD1 dropped from 75th to 50th by 8 weeks but was still putting on weight, just slowly. So I didn’t worry. We weaned at 5 months & by 7 months, she was above 75th 🙈 it sounds silly but my DD just wasn’t that fussed by milk. We never got above drinking 6oz bottles. She loveddd food. Wolfed everything down & quickly dropped to two bottles a day. She’s 3 now & hovers between 50th & 75th on her last HV check.

I’d be happy so long as plenty of wet & dirty nappies & baby is feeding OK. Plus well in themselves 😊

Is he still gaining weight ok? He hasn't dropped weight, he's just not putting it on super quickly. You don't really want them on vastly different centiles anyway.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 12/05/2020 10:33

Well he's gained weight, but not enough to keep him on the 95th centile which he was born at.

Hes nearly 7 weeks and on the 90th centile now. I wasnt sure if babies should ideally stay on the centile they're born on, or it was normal for them to drop.

He is alert (at times), likes being under the baby gym and is cracking out smiles every now and then. He has a load of wet nappies but his dirty nappies have slowed a bit. He's still eating about 5 or so ounces every feed though, so im not so concerned about that.

I think it's only an issue if they drop through a couple of centiles. Dropping 1 can just be them finding the centile they are supposed to be on

JiltedJohnsJulie · 12/05/2020 12:19

Agree with demented. If he's dropped 2 or more, say from the 75th to the 25th it needs investigation. Dropping or gaining a little until they "find their natural line" is totally normal and of no concern.

It sounds as though he's doing brilliant Smile
