Hi guys! Just to jump straight into it I'm really interested in a social work masters however I'm really worried about funding etc. I have a little girl only 4 months (I'm planning on going back next year). I've been reading up on funding and the grant doesn't seem to cover the tuition fees and neither does the masters loan. Am I missing something? Since its just me and my daughter I cant afford to fund the course myself? Also, I will have to give up my job part time did anyone get any income support with them being a masters student? I really need this explaining. Thanks!

How much are your tuition fees?

The nhs bursary covers some tuition fees and maintenance. There may be other grants.

I qualified last year through the Step up to Social work programme, programme for new cohort likely to open in 2021. I got my fees paid and a bursary which worked out as £1300 per month (London) it’s tax free. It takes 14 months.

To be eligible for the programme you need relevant work/volunteering experience and a 2:1 degree and the application process was competitive. The qualification is a PGdip in social work which allows you to register as a social worker and work as one. You can complete the Masters as an add on which you pay that part yourself and it’s a dissertation. I have three primary aged children and managed it fine. There are other funded programmes such as Frontline.

You can check on entitled to what other welfare benefits you could get.

Good Luck!
