Potty training, how long did it take?

We started DC who's 2 and a half on Monday after he's been doing wees on and off on potty. We're day 7, majority of wees are on potty without us asking or reminding him, now he goes himself even if he's got a pull up on he's now pulling it down to go. Some days we get two accidents, some days we're dry and we can even go for our walk with him staying dry.

However he has odd 5 minutes where he seems to panic, running around and then either has accident or just about gets on. We've had 2 poops on potty today but the day before he full on panicked and wouldn't go.

I've never done this before, but is this normal for the first week? He seems to get really upset if he poos on it, although today after all the false starts of him needing one he just went without telling us and called me over after.

I guess my question is how long does it generally take to master it? Or experiences on how long for others? Also when do I start thinking about sticking him on the toilet? Or when I'm out (after covid) do we buy a portapotty or try stick him on public loos?
