Antibiotics and breastfeeding!

I’ve been on antibiotics for a few days (Flucloxacillin) and my milk supply has literally gone! Research says it’s not proven but I’ve seen on a few threads the same thing happen to people, anyone else had this experience??

I’ve taken Flucloxacillin a few times whilst breastfeeding and haven’t ever experienced this. Are you sure it’s not because you’re unwell? Maybe not drinking as much as usual?

Do you have mastitis? Is your baby around 10-12 weeks?

Tr13d · 01/05/2020 16:09

It’s not mastitis no it’s for a small infection in an ingrown toenail, I’m debating stopping taking it because I’m worried about running out of milk, my baby is 8 weeks x

It’s the most common antibiotic for mastitis so one of the reasons so many mums report problems with supply using it is that the mastitis has caused the probs with supply. It’s much more likely that your supply has settled - we all wake up one day and feel our milk has gone, no leaking or engorgement - it’s our body adapting. Feed for long enough and it’s like you can’t see any evidence you make milk. I would never say it couldn’t make a difference but it is really very very unlikely.

Once you have fed for six weeks your supply is very robust - more feeds = more milk :)

Expressing gets much harder though!

Ahh I see, thanks! I was worried because I usually leak quite a lot especially over night and woke up and I hadn’t and didn’t feel overly full or anything( he sleeps for 7 hours at night) so maybe it is just my body adjusting the supply

Yes sounds like:) that should be exactly what happens. It is freaky at first though!
