When do normally toddler move to normal size bed?

My little one is 18 months and has always hated his cot. We had few weeks of heaven when it seemed he accepted it, going straight to sleeping after we'd put him down. But now we are suddenly back to square zero for apparently no reason. As soon as we approach the cot he starts crying and there is no way he falls asleep in it (not going into details, but boy we tried everything!).

In his room there is also a double bed and this is were he sleeps most of the time and where he falls asleep immediately. He clearly loves sleeping there!
The reason we didn't want him to there vs in the cot was we were afraid he would fall. But now he's able to climb up and down very easily.
If we put a gate to his door, do you think it would be acceptable to let him sleep in the big bed or is it too soon? I know it's weird asking strangers about it, but I don't know what I don't know, if you see what I mean. Am I not seeing a potential problem for now or the future?

Thank you!

18 months is fine
Put some playmats down on the floor the side of the bed if you are worried about him falling out at night

Thank you Pocketem. Good idea about the playmat. I think it packing the cot to the attic will be our project for the upcoming weekend!

Hi! I was wondering about this but for a different reason. I’m not worried about little one falling but I am worried about him potentially going downstairs in the middle of the night and hurting himself or something. Do other folk worry about this or am I being daft?

Hi Fascinated, yes I do worry about it a lot! But I am going to put a gate at his door to prevent that. He's not yet very good at going down the stairs, I would be so worried!

We put a stair gate on the bedroom door. Job done. Mine moved into a single bed (with bed guards) at just under 2.

DC 1 moved at 18months because DC 2 was born.
DC 2 was in her cot until she was 4.
It really depends on your circumstances. I would try it if he doesnt like the cot.

It's good for me to know this is not a crazy idea and someone has done it at this age. Thank you guys.
