Baby rice?

Has anybody given their little one baby rice?
My baby girl will be 4 months in a few weeks and was in Sainsburys earlier and saw that lots of the baby porridge and rice was 4 months+? Is it okay to give her it with breast milk? Sorry first time mum here and just wondering others opinions on what's best!
ThanksSmile

NHS recommendation is food from 6 months. No baby needs baby rice, ever. Its just tasteless bulk

SavoyCabbage · 30/04/2020 14:50

No I never did. I didn’t see the point of deliberately giving them something that had no taste. Also, there are lots and lots of fruits and vegetables that are perfect foods for a baby.

The longer you can wait to 6 months the better.

Breast milk is everything your baby needs right now

We started with mashed up banana. Each to their own but baby rice just looks so gross to me and as far as I'm aware it really doesn't have anything good in it. And we started a few weeks shy of 6 months.

Not needed and doesn't meet a baby's nutritional needs. There's the old 'fill the baby up with baby rice and they'll sleep better' but that at best bullshit, and at worst harmful to the baby if they are being filled up with baby rice rather than milk.

They get all of their nutritional needs met from breast milk or formula until around 6 months- I say around because it's not exact.

Some EU countries wean between 4-6 months, the packaging has the 4+ months so it can be sold in those countries.

Wait until the baby is ready to wean(and look up signs of readiness), you'll have a lot more fun with your dd while she discovers all the new tastes and textures!

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 30/04/2020 14:56

No. There’s no nutritional value to baby rice.
They put 4-6 months on the package so they can also sell it in different countries.
The advice is to wait until 6 months.
Is your baby showing all the signs of being ready to wean?
Maybe now is the time to do a lot of research & reading about weaning and the various weaning methods.

I wouldn't bother unless you've been specially advised to wean early. She's better on milk until nearer six months Smile and baby rice is kind of pointless anyway. You can give proper porridge when she's ready to be weaned.

And yes, I'd recommend doing some research. There's bags of info out there. Have a look at the NHS site: www.nhs.uk/start4life/weaning/
