21 month old hitting/tantrums

I’m just looking for some advice

My 21 month old has started having tantrums, throwing himself on the floor etc which mainly I ignore as to not encourage it and distract him etc

However in the last couple of days if he can’t do something (developmentally) or isn’t getting our full attention he’s started coming up and hitting us or inanimate objects and throwing himself on the floor.

I’m not sure what to do about the hitting. I really want to nip it in the bud early. Currently I’m holding his hands saying it’s not nice to hit mummy etc but I’m not sure if that’s working or he’s listening to me.

Forgot to add, he’s got a 10 week old brother and earlier he cried which set off the 21 month old to cry and then hit me

My dd used to threaten to hit and would wack her own head against the floor. So hard she would leave huge eggs know her forehead. We did a clear firm "no" and distracted her. No, oh look there is a cat in our garden. No, oh look we need to put the recycling in the bin.
Shes also got a good vocabulary so when she starts screaming we say "LO, use your words, what's wrong?". She can communicate between words and signs what's up. We cant always fix what it is but we can go back to distraction. Oh you want to see Granny? Shes having a nap so maybe tomorrow.

I think now shes began to process better that tantrums doesn't give her attention so it's much less frequent.

It was tough but it is just a phase, hopefully a short one for you!
