A friend (she has no children) at work was telling me about a friend of hers who lives abroad and how brill a parent she is ...her children eat well and don't eat sweets or drink sweet drinks...she told me that one of her children (about 3/4yrs) asked for Cola because other children were having it so she got some vinegar and gave it to the child and said it was coke of course the child is disgusted...and doesn't want it..another example is the children were given some lollipops from a friend who visited ...she told them they were allowed them after dinner..both parents rubbed the lollipops with garlic again the children were disgusted and didn't want them...I understand where their hearts lie but it just doesn't sit well with me!...my hubby thinks it ingenius and funny! ..my children eat well and drink well too but I tell them why I think sweet drinks and sugary foods should be eaten in moderation but they are allowed them occasionally...wot do you lot think?...is it a case of what works well for each family?...I just don't like it if I'm honest!..lol..or am I just being a jugdemental ratbag?

Reminds me of someone I know, who tells her dc that Mcdonalds is where 'naughty' children have to go to eat as a punishment.

Sooner or later, dc will realise that everyone else is right and they are wrong. Lollipops don't really taste of garlic and that their parents lied to them.

Why they just don't say no and have done with it is beyond me. It's got "backfire" written all over it.

DS was given a taste of Coke by someone else when he was 2 and he thought it was disgusting. I haven't reminded him that taste buds change on this one.

Pretty silly really, one of these days the DCs will get a normal non-garlic lollipop and realise that the parents have been lying to them. They won't trust their parents after that.

Seems to me to be lazy parenting, they can't be bothered by the discussions and tantrums.

She mustn't have enough confidence to say 'no you can't have that' 'because I say so' 'because cola is not for little boys/girls' She is trying to be the good guy by giving into their demands even though she knows she shouldn't. Not really evil, just crap parenting.

It does seem to be going to an awful lot of trouble to avoid saying "no" or setting any kind of firm boundaries, and I'm not convinced that that represents "brill" parenting.

It's a generally known fact (heard on telly a while ago though) that if you totally deprive a kid of sweet/junk food they are more likely to binge on it later in life. She isn't doing her kids any favours is she?!

Its similair to telling children the ice creavan only rings his bell when he has ran out.

My nephew (3) recently went through a stage of spitting, my sister tried everything to get him to stop, but nothing worked, until she resorted to putting mustard on his lips every time he did it............he soon stopped.

lol at telling children that the ice cream van rings his bell when he runs out of ice cream. Would never of thought of that. How inventive are some parents?

The ice cream one is reasonably common. My dad was told it as a kid. The beer man never seemed to run out for my grandad though

I'm half amused and half appalled, tbh. Does seem rather mean. But it's almost the kind of thing my mother might have done. My sister and I were very faddy eaters and she was so pissed off at my only eating 'red soup' that she died chicken soup red throughout my childhood and only confessed when I was an adult! Completely unnecesary, buying tomato is no more trouble than chicken, but I think we drove her insane, tbh. At one stage my sister would only eat omelette. Seriously.
