Gaviscon with EBM

DS is three weeks tomorrow and was started on gaviscon last week. He hadn’t regained his birth weight, brining up large amounts of feed and constantly gagging, squirming and sounded like he is choking every time he laid flat. He gets him self into a bit of a cycle of feeding, falling asleep, I put him down, he strains and gulps then the feed comes up and have to start the whole feed again. We’re currently getting through around 5/6 outfits a day for him and 2/3 for us. He is breastfed and have been giving the gaviscon in a syringe part way through as feed as suggested on the box - some feeds it works and some it doesn’t but also makes him constipated. He is also suddenly fussing, arching his back during feeds, clamping on my nipple and thrashing his head around which is starting to get sore and I’m resenting feeding him now which is sad. Has anyone got any advice or tips? Also I have been expressing and might start giving bottles of ebm, can I mix the gaviscon in this in the same way you would formula? Or another way? Is it less likely to block the teat if breast milk is thinner than formula? Smile

I can't help you but sending you lots of love. My baby has just turned 6 weeks and I'm experiencing similar problems to you. First doctor diagnosed reflux and prescribed drugs but second doctor described colic and basically told me to ride it out. I also got to 2.5 weeks and gave up breastfeeding. I gave up the day after we paid privately to have his tongue tie sorted so felt the worst mum in the world putting him through all that to give up. Since hes been on formula my mental health is okay and the baby is much happier. Dont be afraid to give up breastfeeding, your baby has had a fantastic start. I really feel for you x

My baby is on gaviscone too. He's three months but had undiagnosed reflux for a while. It takes a few weeks to work properly. I give him it in expressed bottles. My son arches his back when he has wind. Do you burp him through feeds?

I have to tilt sons cot (does this, its a tilting next to me) and to stop him sliding down i lie him in a babymoov.

My baby has the same issue (she's 6wks). Gaviscon causes constipation so after a couple of weeks the doctor ended up prescribing lactulose to sort things out.
I ended up having to formula feed so unsure about the breastfeeding issue. Can't see why it would be a problem mixing it into expressed feeds though, I'd do that for ease.

Sorry, hit post before I mentioned that it helps with reflux to keep them upright for about 30min after a feed. I lie my DS belly to chest.
