at wits end with constantly leaking nappies

DS is almost 2 and his nappies just don't seem to be fitting him right.

We've tried size 5, 5+, 6 and 6+, pullups and normal nappies, from Aldi, Tesco, Pampers and Asda. I've tried tucking a flannel into his nappy, tighter and looser vests, making sure his willy is tucked down, waking him up to change him (which doesn't work as not only does he wake up but because he's tired he gets upset and doesn't keep still and it's hard to get the nappies on properly).
I change him once in the morning, once before his afternoon nap and then at bedtime, he's leaking at every nappy change. He has a small cup of milk before his nap and bed but probably only about 4oz, and doesn't drink an abnormal amount of water throughout the day. The leaks are never in the same place, they vary from between his legs, out one side or out the front. But they're never full? So it seems pointless changing him more often.
It's driving me demented because of the extra washing, and I'm due a baby in two months so I really need to be able to stop this. Have read about potty training pants you can get to go over the top but don't know where to start looking? I don't want to go reusable but would consider one of the waterproof wraps that you can get to put over the top. Just anything to reduce my washload!

How big is he? At almost 2, size 5s might be on the big side.

Russell19 · 05/04/2020 16:56

@zigzaggyzoo don't know what weight 5s start at but my 9 month old is in 4s.

difficulttod · 05/04/2020 16:56

He's in size 2-3/3-4 clothes. Very tall and quite sturdy but skinny legs. I thought 5's might be better as they seem tighter so more fitted but nope.

Try going down a size again, once they’re wet they could be leaving gaps. Rascal and friends from Tesco’s have worked best for us, ds is a year old and a big sturdy boy (9kgs at 9months hasn’t been weighed since) he’s still in 4’s but 12-18month clothes are snug.

Caspianberg · 05/04/2020 17:09

I'm not sure many nappies will last if being changed only 3 times per day. I think 6 times would be more average ie every few hours max.

Smithtylater · 05/04/2020 17:12

My nearly 2 year old is in 5-8 nappies a day (more depending on poos) . Maybe need to change them more often when they start feeling squishy.

wintertime6 · 05/04/2020 17:13

You're only changing his nappy 3 times a day??

Rubyroost · 05/04/2020 17:13

We change three times a day if only wees. My son also goes 12 hours at night and never has any leaks. But the only ones that work for us are sainsburys. Everything else leaked at night without fail.

MamaJoon · 05/04/2020 17:15

You really need to change his nappy more often.

Rubyroost · 05/04/2020 17:16

Three times a day is every three hours so not that bad surely?

Slomi · 05/04/2020 17:16

I agree that you may not be changing him often enough. My 18 month old is in size 5+ and we change her (generally speaking) 6 times a day. When she wakes at 7am, after 10am snack, before nap at 12, after nap, before bed at 7pm and sometimes during the night if she wakes. On the nights she doesn't wake for a change, the nappy has usually leaked by morning.

stickman12 · 05/04/2020 17:18

Is it how long your going between nappies? My LO probably needs 5 changes a day otherwise it leaks, he just wees a lot

Rubyroost · 05/04/2020 17:19

@Slomi ours never leak in 12 hours. We change every three hours at 1pm, 4 pm and 7 pm
Hes up at 10 and bed at 10.

Rubyroost · 05/04/2020 17:19

Ours never leak in the day either

difficulttod · 05/04/2020 17:22

Three times a day was standard when I worked in a nursery, so it's what I've always done. And like I said his nappy is never full when I change him, so if I do an extra change it'll only end up two hours before his next one.

I do feel like it's more the fit of the nappy because as I've said, they're not full or bulgy apart from in the morning and changing him at night doesn't work.

Six times a day for an almost two year old seems massively excessive.

OpticVA · 05/04/2020 17:23

Agree with others that 3 changes a day doesn’t seem enough.

Slomi · 05/04/2020 17:24

Well clearly your child is different to mine @Rubyroost, but my daughters would more than likely leak if she was in one for 12 hours. And if you are really only changing him 3 times a day then does that mean you are leaving him in a nappy from 7pm until 1pm the next day? That's pretty grim in my opinion.

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 05/04/2020 17:27

We had similar problems with a tall thin baby and I found Asian-made nappies to be better fitting. We had some french nappies that fit well too.

We'd never have coped with just 3 nappy changes a day though. I think it was at least 6 or 7 a day.

wintertime6 · 05/04/2020 17:28

@difficulttod you may have only changed nappies 3 times a day when you worked in a nursery but surely the parents were also putting a fresh nappy on first thing in the morning and at bed time so that's 5 changes a day which would be more reasonable.

difficulttod · 05/04/2020 17:28

To clarify. He's changed in the morning at 7:30, then again at 12:30 after lunch and before his nap. Before he started to leak he'd be out of that one at 6 for his bath, then in a clean one at 7pm. Recently he has had an extra change at about 3 when he's leaked during his nap. As I said, considering they're never full when I change him, it doesn't seem like long gaps to me.

OP posts:
Rubyroost · 05/04/2020 17:29

@Slomi no he is changed at 10pm for bed and then he is changed as soon as we get him up, that is between 9.30 and 10. Don't all kids sleep for around 12 hours? Not grim at all thanks. Not sure our kids are that different or I have just found nappies that don't leak.

Well inthat case I do five changes a day then! But I didn't really count putting nappy on at night and putting one on in the morn as a change. 😂

difficulttod · 05/04/2020 17:31

Thank you, Rubyroost, for the recommendation. Unfortunately Sainsburys seem to fit even worse than the other brands for us but I do appreciate your post.

If anyone else has any helpful brand suggestions, or pants that might help his nappies fit better, I'd really appreciate it.

My 20 month old gets through 6 nappies in 24 hours (more if he has a day with lots of poo!).

He's in reusables now but it's been a recent change and when he was in disposables it was the same. I agree with previous posters that maybe u should try changing him more.
