at wits end with constantly leaking nappies

DS is almost 2 and his nappies just don't seem to be fitting him right.

We've tried size 5, 5+, 6 and 6+, pullups and normal nappies, from Aldi, Tesco, Pampers and Asda. I've tried tucking a flannel into his nappy, tighter and looser vests, making sure his willy is tucked down, waking him up to change him (which doesn't work as not only does he wake up but because he's tired he gets upset and doesn't keep still and it's hard to get the nappies on properly).
I change him once in the morning, once before his afternoon nap and then at bedtime, he's leaking at every nappy change. He has a small cup of milk before his nap and bed but probably only about 4oz, and doesn't drink an abnormal amount of water throughout the day. The leaks are never in the same place, they vary from between his legs, out one side or out the front. But they're never full? So it seems pointless changing him more often.
It's driving me demented because of the extra washing, and I'm due a baby in two months so I really need to be able to stop this. Have read about potty training pants you can get to go over the top but don't know where to start looking? I don't want to go reusable but would consider one of the waterproof wraps that you can get to put over the top. Just anything to reduce my washload!

I think that's where the misunderstaarising is arising as to what constitutes a change!

Slomi · 05/04/2020 17:32

@Rubyroost you said earlier that 3 times a day is every 3 hours and then proceeded to list 3 times you change your son. But now it's clear you change him 5 times a day not 3 at all Hmm. So no idea what sort of point you are making

Rubyroost · 05/04/2020 17:32

Do you pull the frilly bit at the sides out .

And I also think 3 changes a day is not enough, I am a childminder and will do at least three nappy changes in 9 hours ,I can't see how you can do only three in 24 hours.

Rubyroost · 05/04/2020 17:33

But I change him three times in the day!

difficulttod · 05/04/2020 17:33

FFS I can't even ask for nappy advice without posters pointless ripping into other people

OP posts:
Rubyroost · 05/04/2020 17:34

The point I am making @Slomi is if you have a decent nappy then it's possible to go for 12 hours during bedtime without a leak. Highly recommend sainsburys if people haven't tried already

Slomi · 05/04/2020 17:34

Well i would consider a nappy change in the morning and bed a change also so clearly we have our wires crossed. Apologies @Rubyroost

firstimemamma · 05/04/2020 17:35

"he's leaking at every nappy change"

But you also wrote:

"And like I said his nappy is never full when I change him".

I'm confused op, sorry.

justasking111 · 05/04/2020 17:36

I think I would put terries on him at night folding them the boys way, you can fiddle with them more easily to make them snugger around the legs.

difficulttod · 05/04/2020 17:37

Not sure how that's confusing, firstimemamma.

His nappy isn't full, but where he is weeing it's coming out the sides/back/underside, regardless of how much I try to tuck him in. Which is why, as I've said, I don't think they fit properly.
I can draw you a diagram if that makes it clearer?

We use asda's little angels. We only ever have a problem with leaks when the size is wrong.

Rubyroost · 05/04/2020 17:37

Ahh @difficulttod just read your post. Well I do know different brands work for different babies because of their bums. I might be tempted to try some other brands.. Boots?

difficulttod · 05/04/2020 17:38

Thank you so much, justasking111. I haven't tried terries but I will do some browsing now.

I don't think there changes is enough sorry. It seems quite obvious, nappy leaking and only changing three times a day = change more often. DD is changed when she wakes up, before her nap at 11ish, after lunch at 2ish, late afternoon, bedtime then once in the night otherwise she's soaked when she wakes up. And that doesn't include any unexpected poops.

difficulttod · 05/04/2020 17:39

RaspberryBubblegum have tried Asda 5 and 6. Annoyingly before they started leaking they were the best we'd used though!

Rubyroost I haven't tried Boots.... might see if I can get hold of some, thank you

I've only ever heard of nappies leaking when they are too full, that's why I was confused. I'm truly sorry to have offended you. There is no need for the sarcastic diagram comment / rudeness. I was on this thread in order to try to understand your problem so that I could try to help you.

Rubyroost · 05/04/2020 17:40

God changing on the night! What a ball ache!

hearditfromaunicorn · 05/04/2020 17:41

At 2 my DS wore age 2-3 clothes and a size 6 pampers pull up. The elasticated top meant it moved with him better. I'd be tempted to say you could try potty training for 3-4 days, then you'd know if he's ready. Its now or leave it 7/8 months as your baby is due soon. Is his nappy always wet at a change. Can he go a couple of hours dry?

RandomMess · 05/04/2020 17:42

Perhaps the nappies aren't "full" because it's literally just pouring out the side/back instead.

Def try more frequent changes.

With washable nappies there is still the fit issue. Motherease air flow wraps are the most reliable if boring, popolini popper wraps much the same but a little cheaper.

We use theses with our special needs son who is 5 and wees load. I know they aren't cheap but could he with a go.

difficulttod · 05/04/2020 17:45

Thank you, hearditfromaunicorn. I switched to pullups because I had the same idea, and they do seem to leak less from out the top but do it out the bottom instead, so I wonder if his legs are too skinny.

I am wary of trying potty training as he can't talk yet, he only signs but having said that he will sign if he does a poo. Maybe with the warm weather I should brave it Grin

Rubyroost · 05/04/2020 17:45

Personally I think before two would be too early for potty training for a boy. I have a newborn and we are going to attempt in May when it warms up a bit so toddler can go naked in the garden, hell be two years and 5 months

difficulttod · 05/04/2020 17:46

Thank you RandomMess. I will take a look at those.

@difficulttod my boy is now telling us either just before he has done a pooh or mainly after he has done one.
