at wits end with constantly leaking nappies

DS is almost 2 and his nappies just don't seem to be fitting him right.

We've tried size 5, 5+, 6 and 6+, pullups and normal nappies, from Aldi, Tesco, Pampers and Asda. I've tried tucking a flannel into his nappy, tighter and looser vests, making sure his willy is tucked down, waking him up to change him (which doesn't work as not only does he wake up but because he's tired he gets upset and doesn't keep still and it's hard to get the nappies on properly).
I change him once in the morning, once before his afternoon nap and then at bedtime, he's leaking at every nappy change. He has a small cup of milk before his nap and bed but probably only about 4oz, and doesn't drink an abnormal amount of water throughout the day. The leaks are never in the same place, they vary from between his legs, out one side or out the front. But they're never full? So it seems pointless changing him more often.
It's driving me demented because of the extra washing, and I'm due a baby in two months so I really need to be able to stop this. Have read about potty training pants you can get to go over the top but don't know where to start looking? I don't want to go reusable but would consider one of the waterproof wraps that you can get to put over the top. Just anything to reduce my washload!

That's my thought, Rubyroost. With my daughter I waited until she was 3, said she didn't want nappies any more and that was that. But I do agree that it is a good idea to consider it rather than having leaks when my baby is here. Always a difficult decision to make.

I wanted to do it just before baby was born but l ended up a having quite a difficult end to my pregnancy and then it was decided baby would come three weeks early.

Does he know when he wants to wee? If so it might be worth thinking about potty training.

To give some context, we had this issue with DC3, but the problem was that she had some bladder control and so was holding her urine until she was ready, and then doing a big wee, which would leak. nappies, regardless of size, are designed to absorb smaller quantities urine frequently, but not a torrent.

Al1Langdownthecleghole I don't think so, no.

I have tried teaching him the sign to wee but he doesn't use it, and only seems aware of a poo filled nappy. He also likes to wee on the bath mat straight after he gets out of the bath and seems pretty oblivious to doing that!

Are you pulling frill it bit out and making sure his willy is pointing down?

GlitteryFluff · 05/04/2020 17:59

Frilly bit*

PippinStar · 05/04/2020 18:01

Have you tried any of the eco nappies? I use a mix of cloth but also Eco by Naty and find them really good. In the early days, we were gifted lots of other types of nappies (Pampers, Aldi, Tesco) and every one of them leaked.

You can get them in Boots or health stores.

One of my did power wees and she was 98th centile for height/weight. We used washables but it was a faff until I got enough absorbency and the fit right.

It might still be worth keeping potty training at the back of your mind. It he waits until he gets out of the bath, it sounds like he has some control of his bladder muscles. It's more common for small DC who need to wee, to go in the bath when they are relaxed...

difficulttod · 05/04/2020 18:07

Yes, GlitteryFluff, frilly bit is always out and willy down.

PippinStar I have used Naty before but not with him, I found them very good before but they ended up quite costly. May give them another go though, thank you.

That's a good point, A1Langdownthecleghole, I didn't think of that! I might use that as a point to keep trying to teach him the sign for wee too.

My son was non verbal when potty trained and coped very well. At the start I think it was me being potty trained as I was seeing the signs he needed to go and suggesting he goes then, it moved to him pointing when he needed. He was actually 2 yrs seven months, but I should of done it earlier, but I had a holiday and didn't want to worry about it travelling.

One thing I do find is if the nappies are too small the inner elastic bit ( not the frill) can be half over or sometimes it's just stuck in the manufacturing regardless. Then it leaks out the legs.

Nix2020 · 06/04/2020 00:11

I think it's the sheer force on how the pee is. Coming out. My lite boy is like this when he has diluted juice (he's an addict, on the odd occasion he has it). Does he gulp down his water and milk?

DappledThings · 06/04/2020 09:18

3 nappies a day would be 1 wake up, 2 lunch time ish, 3 bed time. That is not enough

That's all.I do.

OP the only time we've had leaks are with Pampers which we bought when panic buying started a d that was all that was available! I found them very narrow around the bum and easy to slip to the side so they leaked that way. Are any of the ones you are using narrow round there? Sainsbury's and Tesco have always been good for us.

What's he wearing? If my DS' vest or clothes are too tight he gets leaks some times - I was getting lots of leaks, moved him into the next size trouser and it stopped. He's is a heavy wetter and I have to change him before I go to bed otherwise he's soaking through at 3am.
