18 Month Old Not Talking

Hi my 18 month daughter is not talking yet. She's a only child and has just started going to nursery 3 weeks ago.

She babbles to herself and says mama and dada but not directed to anyone. She communicates by pointing and other things however she isn't speaking or showing any signs of starting any time soon.

Is there more I should be doing or getting help from specialists?

My daughter was the same until about age 2, then she just started one day and now she never shuts up, she is 7, she had speech delay and when she was 3 she went to speech therapy and came on leaps and bounds but they only allowed her to be referred to that when she was in nursery as the teachers picked up on it.
Don’t worry I’m sure she will be chatting away sooner than you think

My DC2 was similar (now 21months) at 18 months didn't really say anything. Now he's got a repertoire of about 10-15 identifiable words but mainly just says "Cock" 😳 this could be anything from sock to truck to tractor 🤷‍♀️ depends what he's pointing at 😂 highly embarrassing when we're out & he's shouting "Cock" at the top of his voice 🤦‍♀️

Thank you that does help and @user1485461206 did you pay privately for the speech therapy?

She got all her milestones gone but speech seems to be delayed, I'm sure I'm just being an anxious first time mum

My boy is exactly the same. I've been told not to worry yet and he isn't classed as behind unless he isn't saying anything at 2.

Op, my ds didn’t say a single word until he was 26 months. And then he said car key Grin
He doesn’t stop talking now. He’s an only too.
So don’t assume there is anything wrong. May be nothing to worry about at all.,

Hi OP.

My DD didn't talk then either. She had a few words/sounds that meant something but nothing else. Then one day she woke up and started talking, and that was it. For her 2 year check she was supposed to be able to say a 4 or 5 word sentence, but she could do a lot more than that. Now she's 6, and talking/reading/vocabulary are her biggest strengths!

DS is 20 months and only has a few words/sounds as well. Mama, Dada and Nan-nan, a few animal sounds (or near enough) and "brum brum" for pretty much all vehicles. He babbles constantly and understands instructions.

I think if she understands what you're saying, that's more important. And if she babbles as well, that's good. Do they have a 2ish year check where you are?

Teach her makaton sign language

Get her ears hearing tested
and eyes tested

How is her understanding? E.g. can she point at a picture of a cat in a book if you say 'where is the cat?'.

Anecdotally, I didn't speak until i was 2 and then one day said 'no, mummy, I don't like that' and from then spoke in full sentences.
