Child's understanding

Just wondering if anyone has experience of a child's understanding of parents splitting up?

What I mean by that is, when I get a message about my phone, my 8 yo asks if it's from her Dad. I split when she was 5 and I've lived with new DP for a year.

I've explained me and her Dad are just friends, and will always be for her sake, but I just wonder if she fully understands it.

It sounds like your dayghter wants to be hearing more from her Dad tbh

Children are more egocentric than you seem to think. She's not thinking about you and her dad getting back together so much as is her Dad thinking of her or mentioning her in the messages.
