Car seats

Our child is 4 months in a group 0 car seat.

It's a really tight squeeze to get our little one in there and he can't literally move his arms once his strapped in...but yet the car seat is meant to go up to 13kg?

I've always wrapped our child up with a vest, their normal clothes and a thick coat etc

But was told by a mother at a group that u don't put coats on them in the car seats only cardigans and then you put a blanket on-top to keep them warm...

I also noticed at another mother and baby group meeting another mum also just had her baby in the car seat without a coat and just a blanket...

Is this how it's meant to be done?

Hello.

Yes, you definitely aren’t supposed to have baby in car seat with a coat on. Jumper/cardigan and then blanket. They’re too thick do compromise the role of the straps.
Are there any inserts that can be/need to be removed now he is bigger? Some padding is detachable once babies get bigger.

Yes definitely no thick coats in carseats! The straps need to be a snug fit against their body and the coat stops that fit, if you put them in the carseat with the coat on, then take the jacket off and put them back in without adjusting the straps you'll be able to see how much difference there is.
We just put dd in with a thin jumper or cardie and tuck a blanket in over the top.

Yep, as others said, definitely no thick coats in car seat. It's not safe.

My DD is 95th for height and weight and was still in her infant seat at one year so I'm sure you'll get plenty more use out of it.

As well as no coats op have you removed if your car seat has it at all the newborn support
For instance my two use to have the maxi cosi seat it had a wedge in the bottom which you could remove after the baby was 8 weeks old and then the neck part when 4 months old you'd be surprised this also makes the seat look smaller and the baby too big for seat if these haven't been removed

I would refer back to your car seat booklet

Another note is you can move the straps up to the next level to suit the height of your DC shoulders sorry if you've already done this

No thick coats - it's primarily for safety and there's a risk of overheating too.

There's usually an insert or two you can remove and you can move the straps up.

Thanks, I'll stick to a cardigan/jumper with a blanket.

And yes there are inserts to move it a stage which I've done.
