Baby not sitting up at 7mo

My DS is 7mo and not sitting up. Is this ok? Otherwise he seems very sparky, but I thought they sit up at 5/6 months?

Forgive me if this is a bit paranoid. My Dsis has very severe ASD so I'm perhaps a bit hung up on milestones

It’s fine. Some sit up at a younger age and some later. I know it’s difficult not to compare or worry, but I wouldn’t be concerned at this stage (DC1 could do a vague wobbling that resembled sitting up at seven months but DC4 still needed full support).

Have a chat with your HV at your weigh in clinic if you really are concerned.

If he's developing well otherwise I wouldn't worry. It's normal at that age anyway, and they all do things at different times. Some babies basically never sit. They crawl, they stand, they walk, they run, and eventually they might bother sit down. Other babies sit early but walk late. What is baby doing?

8-9 months is still well within normal. I don't know why everyone insists this milestone is a 4-6 month one. That's very early! And usually only possible if they are placed there. If they do it when older they can get themselves into sitting position.

mynameiscalypso · 03/03/2020 19:07

Does he have a big head? DS is 6 1/2 months and can't really support the weight of his giant head yet. Our GP said it's not uncommon for big heads to delay some of the motor functions a little.

WaitrosesCheapestVodka · 03/03/2020 19:19

Generally otherwise he's fine. He can just about do a commando style crawl to get something he really wants, and he's been rolling for months. He's started to say 'dadadadada' when DH is around too.

Mine commando crawled about 7 months but couldn’t sit up until 9 months.

user1493413286 · 03/03/2020 19:20

Mine didn’t sit up until 11 months as she was so keen to move around that she never concentrated on sitting whereas other babies I knew could sit but moved later

Flatwhite32 · 03/03/2020 19:22

My DD wasn't really sitting at 7 months either. I would say she could sit up properly at 8 months. Anyway, she ended up walking at 13 months, and now at 19 months nursery have said she's 'exceeding' on the physical side of things! At her 10 month check she was in the concern category for gross motor (HV wasn't worried though) which just goes to show how things can change!

limpingparrot · 03/03/2020 19:23

The HV asked this for a 9 month check, so I think you’ve got plenty of time before you worry.

123cupcake · 03/03/2020 19:26

Totally normal mine only sat up unaided last month, at 9 months.

Ticklyrain · 03/03/2020 20:40

I’m not in the UK but my health book says by their 9 month birthday. My toddler didn’t sit unsupported until nearly eight months, but crawled at nine months, and walked at 12. He is developmentally on target with fairly advanced speech.

I know the situation with your sister will be making you anxious but there is such a variation in behaviours at this age that you can worry yourself sick for no reason. I try to just focus on what my baby can do and talk to GP if concerned.

I think it also helps to remember that ASD is a spectrum and there are many people on it that are not significantly impacted by it. Even if your child did have ASD (and there is every possibility they won’t), they could still lead a happy and fulfilling life.
