Baby sleeping bag tog rating

I've been given a few nice 6-12months sleeping bags second hand, for my 8 month old. All the writing on the labels has worn off so I don't know the tog rating. Most feel pretty thin so I'm assuming 1 tog but a couple are a bit thicker. Can I assume they're 2.5 tog? I had new ones for when baby was younger but the thickness doesn't really compare and at least one of those feels thin while the label says it's 2.5 tog - so that's not helping me much.

I don't want to buy new, but need a 2.5 tog bag. Does anyone know how tog ratings actually work?

We've used the 1 tog (summer) or 2.5 tog (winter). The 2.5 definitely feel thicker and cosier, but that might just be the brand? If you have a look on the grobag website, there's excellent advice about what clothing layers and tog sleeping bags babies should wear depending on their room temperature. I found it really difficult to do by "feel", as temperature can be so subjective!

I think they’re probably 2.5 tog, hardly anyone buys any higher than that I don’t think as 3.5 is only recommended if the temperature is below 16 in the bedroom. So I think it’s probably ok to assume they’re 2.5, and dress appropriately underneath - if they are only 1 he will get cold and cry, which is fine, it’s too hot which is dangerous. Maybe just keep an eye the first couple of nights and check regularly he’s not overheating.

Firstly, the thickness doesn’t necessarily correspond to tog as it all depends on material. For example, I’ve had paper thin 2.5 tog but super thick 0.5 tog.

I wouldn’t overly worry though. Unless it’s a super hot sunny day, my DS is always in 2.5 throughout the year

Thanks all! Consensus seems to assume 2.5 tog and keep an eye for a couple of nights. 👍
