Baby’s length at birth ?

Bluebells45 · 27/02/2020 18:27

Hi,

Was anyone else’s baby not measured at birth ? I don’t know how I didn’t notice or even ask the question! Her head was measured but as far as I can see not her length. Am I just being blind ? Where in the red book would it be ? I’m sure tho I’ve examined every page and it’s not there.
Thanks x

Mine wasn't either (Scotland). They are so curled up when they come out that I imagine it's a bit pointless trying.

I worked on a neonatal ward, we no longer measured newborns length as it is so difficult to get it accurate.

RhymingRabbit3 · 27/02/2020 18:32

My daughter wasnt measured as far as I can remember. I dont really know why they would need to measure length and, as other said, it's so inaccurate when they're all curled up that it's pointless.

I remember mine were between 48cm - a dd.. And 9. 3 ds was 54!! Various inbetween dc!

Whattheother2catsprefer · 27/02/2020 18:37

Mine was nine years ago - well sort of because to quote my GP looking at his red book at the six week check "well that's a load of bollocks!". He was visibly a very long baby and he'd been marked as on about 10th centile for length. It was a waste of ink!

userabcname · 27/02/2020 18:39

Neither of mine were - 2yo and 4mo here.

Bol87 · 27/02/2020 18:40

My DD was first measured at her one year assessment, never as a baby. I imagine because it’s pretty difficult to get accurate & doesn’t tell you anything overly significant! Weight (and loss/gain) is an indicator of health & feeding, head circumference could be a concern health wise too but height as a newborn doesn’t say much..

Buyitinbamboo · 27/02/2020 18:41

My daughter wasnt. My son was but only because they were interested (he was huge) but they said it very unreliable as they are so bunched up

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 27/02/2020 18:44

My children are 24 and 19 years old and neither were measured. I thought it was an American thing?

BammBamm · 27/02/2020 18:53

Mine were born nearly 6 and 4 years ago and length was measured at birth. DS was measured by Midwife at 60cm and the HV came out and said that couldn't be right, so remeasured, but it was.

DramaAlpaca · 27/02/2020 18:56

My children are in their 20s and none of them had their length measured at birth.

MynameisJune · 27/02/2020 18:57

Both my 4 year old and 9 month old were measured for length at birth.

FoamingAtTheUterus · 27/02/2020 19:01

My son was and my daughter wasn't.

Son was purely because he was so long and the doctors and nurses were arguing over his length so the tape measure was whipped out. I can still remember he was 22.5 inches which is in the top 0.5 percent apparently........well it was 19 years ago.

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 27/02/2020 19:09

Dh seems to think he was, I don't remember them telling us a length just weight. I've checked his red book and the only measurement I have is for between 6 and 8 weeks. I can't even see if his head was measured at birth.

I found it on his height and weight charts. It's just a small dot between 1 month and 2 months.

rosieposies · 27/02/2020 19:11

Nope only weight for DD. HV said that length isn't measured for a while as they're all scrunched up 😭

caffeinefix · 27/02/2020 19:38

It's not done at birth. Head circumference is. We do lengths at 6/8 weeks, then 6 months, 15 months, 27 months and finally 3 1/2 yrs.

modgepodge · 27/02/2020 20:42

Mine was measured at a few weeks old when we attended the children’s ward for a consultant appointment. They didn’t use a tape measure though, they have a little gadget the child lies on and they press their legs flat and it moves a gauge along to show the length. My daughter really cried when they stretched her legs out to do it, so I can see why they don’t bother at birth as it doesn’t really tell you much (not really sure why they do it when we go for appointments either tbh!)

DappledThings · 28/02/2020 14:41

Neither of mine had length measured till their one year check up.

DefConOne · 28/02/2020 15:01

Mine are 12 and 9 neither had length measured at birth.

PrayingandHoping · 28/02/2020 15:07

They don't measure them anymore as a baby in my area. I asked and they said it's because it's not accurate until the stand
