21 month old not talking

I’m starting to get a little worried about my 21month old son Not talking, he can say mum, dad and grandad but that’s it and it’s few and far between that he will say them most off the time he just babbles. He is very physically active doesn’t stop at all, he seems to understand what we say just doesn’t repeat anything.
Should I be as worried as I am about it?

@Hill1991 I know this is an old post. The 21 month old you described is the exact same as mine. Just wandering if you got referred to SALT in the end and if it helped, or if you particularly did anything different.
Or if he just started randomly talking by himself not long afterwards?
Hard not to worry isn't it x

Yes got referred to salt in the end at about 2.5 which really helped they are still involved now more through the school as he struggles with social interaction with other kids, he did get a diagnosis of asd at 3.5 but the thing that's probably helped the most with his talking starting nursery as his nursery has a school attached to it they have a fantastic senco team who pushed for him to assessed, and they put a 1-1 in place before he even got the diagnosis and he's got the same 1-1 now that he's started reception and will have all through primary.

Sorry for the long post.

Also just after I originally wrote the post he stopped talking altogether.

Thanks for getting back to me.Did you go through GP or HV for SALT referral? And do they tend to make you wait til they're over 2?
At the moment my DM cares for him but I think I will try and get him in nursery to help bring him on a bit more

Health visitor referred us GP wasn't interested but it was during covid and lockdown. And not sure I think it depends on which area your from from when you can either self refer or need either HV or GP to make a referral for you, but there is a long waiting list once your referred, I would say on the nursery front make sure you look around for the best fit for your ds if you've already got child care then you can take your time a get the right place for him and you.

Hello, hope you and the little one are alright. I am worried about the same thing now, and just wanted to check how is the little one doing now ?

Hill1991 · 01/05/2024 07:12

@LittleMonkeyJumping he's doing great now with the help of his 1-1 he's excelling at school, he also doesn't stop talking now. My advise is if your worried speak to your HV about it they really helped me with getting my ds into SALT
