How to encourage DS (6) to move on from picture books

DS is 6 and we have lost the habit of reading at bedtime but are re-instigating it. I would love to read chapter books etc to him but he seems "stuck" on his picture books. I have bought some really lovely books but if they don't have pictures he is not interested.

Is he just that bit too young? Or a bit lazy?

He isn't too young. My son was 6 in March and is seriously into the Famous Five. He has a chapter a night and they are great for him. They have the odd ink drawing but there isn't any need for any more. We have got some FF videos off ebay and the kids enjoy them too.

He is definitely not too young to enjoy chapter books, but perhaps he himself isn't yet ready for them for his bedtime story. Friend's DS is almost 6 and he still prefers pricture type books to longer story books IIRR. Not lazy, just finds them more interesting at the moment.

Have you tried chapter books with appealing pictures? Dd1 (5) loves My Naughty Little Sister though this may be too girlie for you, but the Shirley Hughes illustrations keep her going through a sea of text. We've just read the Sheep Pig by Dick King Smith (the Babe book) which has a few illustrations too. Also Roald Dahl's have all the Quentin Blake illustrations. In fact, Roald Dahl is probably the best to start off with as there are quite a few books that look like chaptery books, but are very short and manageable - Magic Finger, Enormous Crocodile, Dirty Beasts, etc plus others - I'll have a rummage upstairs to see.

Btw, I wasn't sure if you were meaning that you read them to him or he reads them himself. I was assuming the former but might be being dopey.

We started DS on a compilation of Thomas the Tank stories when he was 4. He got used to the idea of reading a big book through and putting the book mark in each night but they are each their own story and have the pictures in. We also read a Beatrix Potter compilation. And since then have read lots of Roald Dahl/Horrid Henry/Captain Underpants/Michael Murpurgo. Captain Underpants might be good because they have pictures, the odd comic strip and very short chapters. And they are silly enough, and enough toilet/underwear references to appeal to the average male 6yo.
