Newborn cold / blocked nose - any tips?!

There was a thread on this I found from a few years ago but it won't let me view it on the app for some reason..

As the title suggests, 2 month old with a completely bunged up nose and cough (caught from DH we think). Saline spray and the sucker thing aren't touching the sides and baby can't sleep at all on back. Baby is breastfed but is really struggling with that as well due to blocked nose.

I've raised the head of the Moses basket but this doesn't seem to help at all..

Am I just going to have to ride it out with no sleep and a grouchy baby?! How long can I expect it to last? My online research says 3 weeks.. SURELY not?!?! Shock

Poor thing. Snufflebabe do a vapour oil thing suitable from birth. Might be worth a try? I've not used it but I used their vapour rub with DS (but is only suitable for 3 months plus) and found it really helped him. Also if you can have a hot shower or bath and create a nice steamy bathroom that might help baby breathe a little easier. I'd definitely keep going with the other steps you are taking too, it will all be helping!

I found sitting in the bathroom with baby with the shower on and letting it get steamy helped. And saline spray.

I have found using a humidifier with our children really helps when they have bad colds.

My baby had a cold over Christmas - some of the symptoms lasted three weeks (like green poo) but he wasn’t snotty and snuffly for the whole three weeks. Fingers crossed your baby gets over the worst of the symptoms soon!

I feel your pain, dd had a blocked nose for the first 2 months of her life. Saline, sucker, repeat repeat, that was my life. The steamy room thing helps sometimes, and a couple of drops of olbas oil in a humidifier seems to help too. But basically we had to ride it out.

Put snufflebabe on you so baby inhales it while feeding - I used to rub it along my collar bone. When you have a shower, put baby in bouncy chair in bathroom to steam 😊

Actually, bouncy chair is generally useful when they have colds, can sleep a bit more upright for naps (with you watching).

Thanks all.. looks like getting steamy is the way to go, I'll give it a try Grin

Calpol plug ins are great! Also saline drops/spray and a nose Frida is a must!

Also take baby into bathroom with when you shower and let them get steamed.

Mine has her 4th nasty cold today at 5 months, I’ve been snot sucking all day.

Calpol vapour plug is the best thing I have found

Hi,

If there is one thing I could not live without that I would recommend to every mother to buy is the snufflebabe nasal aspirator. You buy the Nasal drops aswell. Use the drops first to soften what’s in there and then suck them out with the aspirator. I could not believe what came out the first time I used it. It’s literally amazing. The image attached was the first time I used it when baby was 6 weeks. Poor thing. She was snoring at night before I removed it x

What helped my little one was breast milk in the nose. My SIL had told me and it really helped.

Humidifier with a few drops of eucalyptus oil.
