Just noisy baby or something wrong?

My 6week old is incredibly noisy at night. Some nights, she sleeps peacefully between feeds hardly making a wimper but other nights such as last night, she was grunting and groaning between feeds. She isn't crying and actually only woke twice as usual for her feeds. I am concerned though because she does not do this every night so is something wrong? Has anyone got experience of this and may have an answer.

I do give her saline drops usually in case of mucous and raise her head slightly which apparently is good for wind or a cold.

Apart from my worry for her, it is also keeping me up at night!

Was she a section baby? IN that case she may be mucousy, my ds came out snotty and is still snotty now at 16 mo.

I wouldn't give saline drops unless she actually has a cold as tehy may interfere with her nose's natural cleansing mechanisms. Babies are noisy and this doesn't sound unusual. If you are worred then talk to your hv/GP but so long as she is feeding and gaining weight there won't be naything much to worry about. Btw I find playing soft music a soothing way of dealing with a baby noises.

Some babies are just noisey. DD used to grunt,groan and snore from day one.

DD is now 3.7 and has a realy loud snore.

Yes, she was as section baby. Do your babies also move around a lot as well as make noises. She tends to move her arms around - I sometimes wonder if she really is asleep.

Moving is normal too! What about swaddling?

My dd2 is and was a very noisy sleeper at times: in her case, its due to a 'floppy larynx' or laryngomalacia. Her breathing sometimes sounds like a squeaky door, or as though she is choking/groaning - hard to describe, really. It wasn't noticeable till she was about four weeks old, and then got steadily louder until around 7 months - now its getting quieter as her larynx hardens up.

Its probably not that at all, but wanted to mention it - if your dd's noises get louder as she gets older, and sound like noisy breathing, might be worth asking your GP. Laryngomalacia is hardly ever a problem, nothing to worry about in itsself, but worth knowing about because can go hand in hand with reflux, and can also cause more problems when babies catch upper respiratory tract infections.

As for moving around, sounds pretty normal to me

hi there, my baby is incredibly noisy! he makes very strange noises, as if he is trying to clear his throat, repeatedly. he doesn't do it all the time- only in the second half of the night. and he is usually flailing around when he does it, arms and legs pumping!
the first half of the night, he usually sleeps so silently I have to go right near him to check he's still breathing! but the second half of the night he seems to sleep a lot more lightly, and makes a hell of a racket! He seems to have his eyes shut when he's doing it, but it's hard for me to sleep with all the noise he's making.
LIke you I got quite worried about this, and took him to the GP, who said he could tell very easily that DS did not have any kind of respiratory problem. The reason was that DS was at that point sucking on a dummy, so having to breathe through his nose, and he was breathing quite silently - therefore, (said the doctor) no problem. A friend of mine has a young baby the same age as mine (five weeks) and he also makes so much noise in his sleep she and her husband struggle to sleep! I think it's normal for some babies.

Thanks - that does reassure me. She hardly made a sound last night but hiccups woke her early! It's all so unpredictable.
