When did you start weaning and how did you do it?

Hello!

DD is 16 weeks today and has started to show signs of silent reflux. I was going to speak to the doc regarding gaviscon or anti reflux milk but then, after starting to google I found that you can start wearing at 4 months.

I messaged my HV for the 87th time since LO was 4 weeks old but I think she may have left the country as she just ignores me. She’s left me a vm once promising to ring me back and that’s all I’ve heard so I’m going to have to try and get in with our ever busy GP (who is a miserable sod anyway that doesn’t seem to like children and sits and Google’s everything I ask him...?)

Anyway so, thought I would ask for a bit of advice on here first, so that I can go in armed with a bit of info!

Do you think 4 months is too early to wean? Have you done it and if so, how did you start and what foods did you introduce first?

Also, if you wouldn’t recommend weaning before 6 months. Do you have any reflux advice?

Thanks!

Nhs advice is 6 months as it may cause problems in later life. DD was under a paediatrician for her reflux who said don’t wean until 6 months.

I started BLW at 6 months. Babies only need milk at 4 months and their tummies may not be able to handle anything else. DD had reflux and we were recommended anti-reflux formula, which we used from 8 weeks. It didn't completely get rid of the reflux but it made a huge difference. She was on it until we switched to cow's milk at 1.

DD had reflux. It made her extremely cranky! (Not that I can blame her!)

We were given baby Gaviscon for it which helped her mood but she still threw up a lot.

We ended up weaning at 5 months and 3 weeks (so really close to 6 months and that was suggested by the HV rather than us)

The guidelines are 6 months for a reason. I didn’t want to wean any earlier as they think that a lot of cases of IBS and related bowel issues could be as a result of being weaned too early.

I’d see what you GP suggests first....

Hi thanks for your replies!

I’ve done some more research and found other mumsnet threads from a lot of people warning not to wean early and tbh i would much prefer to continue giving baby girl bottles for now either way but, that’s concreted the decision!

Picked up some anti reflux milk tonight and 2 bottles in she has MUCH improved! Going to stick with this for now as obviously two bottles isn’t enough to go off so if we do still think she may be struggling we are going to contact GP.

Thanks again!
