How many steps a day does your child do?

Hi

My son got a fitness tracker for Christmas and he’s loving it. It’s really encouraging him to get the steps. I looked up how many steps an 8yo boy should be doing and it said 15,000 a day. He’s getting 9-10,000 each day.

Just interested if you’re boys of this age get around the same? I can’t think what we should be doing with him, other than running laps, in order to hit 15,000!

My very almost 8 year old boy gets about the same and this is something I have often wondered as well!

Ok, good, thanks! Not just us then!

My 8 yr old is varying between 12000, 21,000 steps. ( day with cubs and PE)
We have about a 600m walk to school and I think he runs a lot at playtime.
I think it will be a lot easier to do when the weather is nicer and they can do more park time after school.

Yes it will be interesting to see in the spring. But 5,000 more seems ridiculous! I wondered if it would change now he’s back at school, but it hasn’t much.

Is he healthy? Does he do games/sport? Is his weight normal for height? If yes don't worry about how many steps he's doing.

My DD did 10,000 on Monday, the first day she has done this/told me. I was surprised as we just walked to school, and she did playtimes and some dancing in her bedroom to music!

PutYourBackIntoit · 08/01/2020 20:46

I'm really surprised, my super active boy got 8000 today which was his highest this week. I thought it would be loads more 😬

Emmapeeler1 · 08/01/2020 20:46

Ps I didn’t know they were supposed to do 15, and think you’re right that 15 would mean doing an additional run or a football lesson or something. I thought 10K was good going for a normal day though.

I have a fitness tracker and so do two DDs.

One averages 13,500 or so but she is the sedate teenager and isn’t allowed to wear the tracker for sporting activity at school.

The other is younger and wears it at playtime etc, averages 14,500

I wear mine all the time and average 15,670 per day.

We are in constant competition with each other, which helps.

My 11 year old gets between 17,000 -22,000 a day but he never sits still.

The figure is for boys aged 6-10, so obviously the figure is different for girls and other ages.

He’s not sporty. But he is full of energy, runs round lots with his friends at break at school and at cubs. Dances around the kitchen. Normal weight for his height. Healthy in every way. So I’m not worried about him. Just curious about the figure being achievable and whether other boys his age achieve it!

Considering that kids often get more steps for the same distance (see above about always being in competition!) mainly due to being shorter than the adults and needing to make more strides to get the same distance - I’d have thought the average female would be taking more steps than the average male, due to height differences. Does that apply to kids?

This is what I found

I had to take the train to work and it involved some extra walking (maybe 1hr 15 mins) and I got 16K without trying, normal work day I get 6k unless intake an effort to go a walk in the evening. I expect spring will make s big difference if he plays outside.
