Newborn sleeping most of the time at almost 4 weeks!

My newborn, I guess not so newborn as she is almost 4 weeks seems to sleep most of the day and night. She wakes for feeds about every 2 hours day and night. Feeds in 10 mins and back to sleep. She likes to be held to sleep a lot. But once in a deep sleep she can be put down. If she is awake she usually just fusses and either wants to eat or sleep some more. It’s my third and I know they are all different. I’m wondering should I try to be waking her more during the day? She is gaining weight just fine. I just would like to get her sleep 3-4 hour stretches now. She was born 2 weeks early, so does this make a difference? Like she might still be in sleepy newborn stage? She suffers a bit of reflux. So that is why she fusses when she is awake.

All (4) mine pretty much just slept for the first 6 weeks??

TrixieFranklin · 04/01/2020 19:23

Mine were the same, 2 were a month early and 1 was a week late. Babies sleep. Enjoy!

Mine was the same and just slept for the first 6 weeks.

However, it all went south after that!

Thanks for the feedback. My first barely slept during the day after the first couple weeks. And my second was only slightly better at sleeping so this is a real shocker for us lol. My dh keeps asking if something is wrong w her! So it’s reassuring that others have the same.

She sounds like a dream! My first slept no more than 15 minutes all day long as a newborn, it was hard! And a shock as I thought babies just slept! I’m praying no.2 is much yours! Really don’t worry, she’ll become more alert in her own time! 4 weeks is still very new & you say she was a bit early too! Smile

Bol87 I feel for you. My first barely slept during the day. She fussed all day long and had to be held while standing. But at least she slept at night. For this one I just keep worrying if she sleeps all day she will be awake all night. But she just does the same, sleeps . But she does wake every two hours to feed .

This reminds me of our little one. She was slightly early. She slept a lot during the first few weeks and we worried she was too sleepy. Then she didn’t sleep and we worried she wasn’t sleeping! Speak to your health visitor if you’re worried. Presumably she’s feeding well and has lots of wet nappies?

Mamabear12 · 05/01/2020 00:38

Polkagirls Lol. That happened to us one day when she was up four hours and I thought uh oh! We got what we wished for! But the next day she resumed her usual sleeping! Health visitor and several midwifes (due to having to monitor my high bp so they see her as well when theyncheck on my) have seen her and say she gaining well etc. We were just wondering because we never had a sleepy baby. We thought these were a myth!

She has finally gone 3 hours between feeds at night - a miracle! I just fed her both breasts and hoping she lasts another 3 hours. If I can get her to last 3 hours between feeds at night it would make such a difference for my quality of sleep!

Glad I finally get a baby that sleeps! My first really fought her sleep (she still does at almost 8 years old!).

Yep, I can remember feeling this too. I found it strange that they were asleep so much and thought that I had it made. 4 years later and I realise it was just part of them being a newborn. I think I can count on one hand the amount of nights I have not had to get out of bed at least twice. Make the most of it!

My DD is 4 weeks and she’s the same, sleeps most of the time. She had been waking every 3 hours but since having her tongue tie done she’s been going 4 hours between feeds. All 3 of mine have been like this Shock

My two were like yours. Son 1 was wide awake during the day and screamed...a lot! Son 2 was comatose during the day but more wakeful at night but still slept reasonable lengths of time. I think second babies can be more chilled because you are not so focused on them. I, like you, wondered if there was something wrong with Son 2. He is 19 now and still loves his bed!!!!
