4 month old not napping

Hi lovely mums. My LO is 4.5 months old. She used to sleep well and night and used to nap for 2.5hrs at daytime. Suddenly from past few weeks she is sleeping very less at daytime and waking up more at night as well. She naps just for 30-40 minutes around 12 and. 15 minutes later in the evening. I have tried swaddling, sleeping at side but of no use. This makes me very tired emotionally and physically. Any magic to bring the old long naps please! She flaps her hands alot when put to bed and wakes herself up. If swaddled then keeps moving her head left and right. Help!

Have you taken her to dr to check ear s or throat. Baby dont sleep if they are ill.

4 month sleep regression? We were up for hours every night.

I've always been pretty hot on naps so at the first sign of a yawn, I'd take DS off for a nap/buggy walk/car drive depending on desperation levels.

Thanks for responding. I have not checked her throat or ear... But she looks fine. Night time she sleeps well. She sleeps in buggy but wakes up as soon as i stop moving or reach home Confused

I could have written this myself. Tgis is exactly what happened to me. Apparently if they don't get longer naps then they don't get restorative sleep and it can make their sleep even worse. Naps directly affect night sleep. I had to teach him to self settle.

I started sleep training and now his sleeping is absolutely amazing below is a typical day can vary slightly depending when he wakes up for the day. Took me three weeks of sleep training to get to it and he now does it very consistently. He is 5 months now.

7-9am awake
9am-10am nap
10am-12pm awake
12-2pm nap
2-4pm awake
4-4:45pm nap
6pm start bedtime routine (bath, story, milk, bed) asleep by 6:45/7pm
Wakes up for a feed between 11:30pm and 3am

I can dm you more info of what I did but it did involve some controlled crying/gradual room retreat so it depends if you are ok with that or not

If the baby is your first child I'd highly recommend letting baby nap in your arms. This is what we did with ds until he was 10 months. The house was far from perfect but I watched a lot of tv and look back on all the cuddles now with fond memories. Each to their own though of course. It worked for us Smile

There's a sleep regression at 4 months. Completely normal. If you can have cuddles for daytime naps that helps. Although it's not always possible, I know. But you will come out the other side!
