How do i get my 8 month old to take bottles or cups of milk? She currently is breastfed and will drink water from a bottle or cup but not milk. Breast milk or formula. I have 6 weeks left until i return to work so am a bit worried

Please ignore the random post.

I haven’t had to do this. Dd drank expressed kilt from bottles without complaint.

Are you able to not be around when your baby needs feeding?

My youngest was a complete bottle refuser and wouldn't drink milk from a cup either.

I went back to work when he was 9 months old and he just went without milk while I wasn't there (8-5.45) and made up for it when I was home

Wavingwhiledrowning · 03/01/2020 08:24

I had exactly the same issue before I returned to work. It was pretty stressful at the time (and unexpected as my other two took to the bottle straight away!). I had more success with Mam bottles, and experimented with the temperature of the milk. It also turned out she was teething, which was an irksome coincidence!
Easier said than done, but try to stay relaxed about it and don't keep forcing it because of the looming deadline. Even after I'd got DD to take a bottle, she still wouldn't have anything at nursery, and was totally fine.

Try medela calma or dr brown’s breastlike bottle but get someone else to give it. My breastfed baby won’t take bottles from me but will from others.

Thank you. Yes ive tried going out for the day and leaving her with Dh With pumoed milk but she still doesnt drink at all. And i have tried countless bottles. I will try experimenting with temperature

Also have you tasted the milk yourself? I have high lipase meaning my milk has a soap taste pretty soon after expressing and I had to scald the milk to avoid this

Blondieblond · 04/01/2020 21:31

Yes i tasted it and it tastes fine thats really good to know though - i would never have thoight of that! Ive tried a baby cup with a straw and she at least chews the straw rather than pushing the whole thing away. Still struggling!

Mine never took a bottle. He was 10 months when I went back to work and I fed him morning, as soon as I got home from work, then before bed and often once in the night. By 12 months it was just morning and bedtime, then I stopped at 13 months. Started giving him some cows milk in a cup at around 11.5 months too.

They shouldn’t drink from a bottle past 12 months anyway so if you can avoid it may be worth just coping without for a few months.

Lalapurple · 05/01/2020 19:51

How long are you gone? I asked about this elsewhere and at 8 months you should be able to leave without milk - just feed before and after and she can have food and water during the day.
