Is 2 too young to move to a toddler bed?

DS1 will be 2 when DS2 turns 6 months old

At this point, I’ll need a cot for DS2 and was planning on using DS1s (with a new mattress) and get DS1 a normal toddler bed. DS2 would then have his cot, that eventually would turn into his toddler bed

But I’m not sure if DS2 will be ready by then

I’m now contemplating just getting a second cot in case DS1 just isn’t ready and needs to be in it for another 6 months-1 year...

I suppose at least that way they both have consistency with cots/toddler beds etc but the cost is far higher this way (a second cot is more expensive for the ones I like than a standard toddler bed)

Dd went into a single bed age 2. Ds was in a cot until 2 and a half and then also went into a single bed.

Mine both hated cots so were in beds early. They have bunks and the bottom bunk is almost on the ground so my youngest has been in there since I moved him out of my room at 8 months old. I think 2yrs is fine, might need a bed guard while he gets used to it Smile

Mylittlepony374 · 02/01/2020 22:24

Mine was in bed at 18 months. Because she was getting dangerous trying to climb out of cot. She did fall out of her toddler bed once or twice but I had padded ground so she was fine.

You’ll know your child best but my DD was 18 months going into a bed because she never really settled in a cot (partly because I’m short and struggled to put her in there asleep without her waking) and got on fine with it. We bought a bed guard for one side so she can’t fall out and a stair gate for the door and it’s worked for us.

newtothenet · 02/01/2020 22:25

I'm sure it will be fine. My daughter was 22 months when my second daughter was born. We moved house two weeks before DD2 was born and decided to get all the changes done in one go so DD1 moved into an adult single bed (we deliberately chose a low bed with a soft headboard). It didn't seem to bother her at all - she didn't fall out and she didn't get out when she shouldn't have done.

commoncoot · 02/01/2020 22:26

My eldest was 2 when he went into a single bed.

Will be doing the same for DS2 when he's about 22 months. I need his cot for his sister..

MrsBricks · 02/01/2020 22:27

I had three children all in normal single beds before 2.

BikeRunSki · 02/01/2020 22:28

My dc were both in single beds with bed guards at around 20 months.

FairfaxAikman · 02/01/2020 22:28

We moved DS at 19 months as he hated the cot. Now when he wakes he just pads through to us (he's still not 2)

Starlight456 · 02/01/2020 22:31

My Ds was 15 months because he was a climber 🙈. But you know your own child.

katmarie · 02/01/2020 22:31

We picked up our cot on ebay and bought a brand new mattress for it, we had the same dilemma, ds will 2yrs 4 months when dd needs to move into the nursery and 'his cot'. Hes just not ready for a toddler bed yet. So we bought a second cot for about £20 I think. If its cost you're concerned about there are dozens of cots being sold second hand.

Jeleste · 02/01/2020 22:32

DC 1 moved to a normal bed at 18 months when DC 2 was born. He was fine. You should just try it.
No way i was gonna buy a 2nd cot with one child at 18 months.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 02/01/2020 22:35

Dd was 2 exactly when she moved into her toddler bed- she kept climbing out of her cot.

I thought it would be a nightmare and she wouldn’t be ready but it took 3 or 4 nights and after that she’s been fine.

I think it helped that we used the same pillow, duvet and sheets so it wasn’t completely new for her.

Notso · 02/01/2020 23:00

DC1 went into a single bed at 14 months.
DC2 was 2 years and four months.
DC3 and 4 were very close together, we bought a travel cot for DC4 instead of having two cots.

CointreauVersial · 02/01/2020 23:03

No, not too young. I have three DCs with 18‐24 month gaps....and only one cot.

DD1 was able to climb out of (and back into) her cot with ease by the age of 2, so she was far safer in a bed.

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 03/01/2020 06:12

My first went into a toddler bed with a bed guard before he was 1

dalmatianmad · 03/01/2020 06:34

Both my DC were in beds at just over 15 and 16 months, we didnt have any issues with them climbing out. Do what suits you!

TowelStripes · 03/01/2020 06:36

Also, you can share mattresses between siblings. It's outside the family you need to buy new.

2 is a normal age to move to a toddler bed. Whatever you do, move your toddler into the bed a few weeks before moving the baby into the cot. Otherwise the toddler will feel like they’ve been kicked out in favour of the baby.

user1493413286 · 03/01/2020 06:51

DD went into a toddler bed at 22 months and was more than ready. I’d suggest moving him a couple of months before the baby is born so the two aren’t connected. We made quite a big deal of her new big girl bed and she loved it. I put a rolled up duvet on the floor in case she fell out which I think has happened 2-3 times in a year and she hadn’t even woken up because of the soft landing and how close to the floor the bed is

RhymingRabbit3 · 03/01/2020 06:53

No it's not too young. Buying a second cot to use for a few months is just a waste of money. I dont think going into a single/toddler bed is one of those things they have to be "developmentally ready" for, like potty training. IMO it's more about the parents being emotionally ready! Stick a stair gate on his room and make sure it's safe in there if he gets out of bed. The first few nights he might climb out of bed but it doesnt take long for them to get the idea if you're consistent.

Queenofheartsnomore · 03/01/2020 07:02

I have an 18mth old dd. I have always co-slept with her but now at the stage where dp wants his bed back. I have a single divan bed in her room, would it be okay to put her in there with something padded on the floor and can I get a guard that works with a divan?

kittlesticks · 03/01/2020 08:21

Similar situation here and we have moved DS to a toddler bed, he was pretty much exactly 2. Went ok, we put a soft mat on the floor as he did fall out a couple of times.

Caterina99 · 03/01/2020 12:10

DS moved to a regular single bed at 21 months. No issues at all. Kept the cot (and the same mattress) for DD to move into it a few months later.

DD is 2.3 now and is perfectly happy in the cot so I’ve no intention of moving her any time soon.

It’s really up to you, I’ve several friends that moved the first to a bed, and several that bought a second cot. All with around a 2 year age gap. You just do what you think is best, and what you can afford. But 2 is not too young
