When did your DC stop napping?

DS is only 19 months & for the past three days has refused his nap.

We did move him into his own bedroom on Sunday, which I expected to temporarily change his sleep habits but he's done really well & goes to sleep perfectly at bedtime so I don't know if it's related.

Today I spent 2.5 hours trying to get him to nap before giving in. Do I keep trying? He seems so young to not have a sleep during the day but I don't know what I can do.

My DS3 stopped napping at 19 months, he goes to bed at 6.30ish though and doesn’t wake up until 7.30/8 so I don’t mind. It might be he just doesn’t need it anymore

JiltedJohnsJulie · 02/01/2020 20:19

Just over 3 and the next one still had a nap some days right up to her 4th birthday.

ElbasAbsentPenis · 02/01/2020 20:20

Mine dropped his fully at 2.5 years & we should have done it earlier. He was fighting bedtime badly, and up until 10.30 or 11 at night, with frequent night wakings. He’s been fine without naps since we stopped them, and his night sleep is much less interrupted. But the days are long and relentless. Most dc in his nursery had a year of sporadic napping before dropping it for good at 2.5 or 3, so no need to try to make a 19mo keep napping on days when they fight it, I’d say.

Mine stopped at 1.

She hasn't slept in the day since (unless very unwell)

Sparrowlegs248 · 02/01/2020 20:24

Ds1 never did nap properly (as in, in a cot) it was always on the go, car, pram etc. He stopped napping at around 15 months, but would fall asleep in the car if we were out later than 3.

Ds2stopped napping when I moved him into a bed, around 2. He will still snooze in the car sometimes now at nearly 3.

doyouthinkhesawme · 02/01/2020 20:24

DS1 hasn't napped in the day since he was around 15 months old.
DS2 is now 3.5 and napped until closer to 3.

Different strokes for different folks. Although there were only 17 months between DS1 and 2 so him dropping his nap shortly before his brother was born was soul destroying! Sad

Wavingwhiledrowning · 02/01/2020 20:26

DS1 stopped napping around 18 months. Nothing would have persuaded him to do it. DD1 still loves a cheeky nap, and she's nearly 4. Who knows what DD2 will do! They're all so different - they'll let you know what they need (even if that's a bit of a knackered meltdown after a few days of no naps!).
I used to spend ages trying to get DS1 to nap and now really wish I'd have enjoyed proper time with him instead of losing my mind ssshing and patting him in a pitch black room!

13/14 months.
Sleeps like a dream most nights though, usually solid 13 hours so I take the trade off!

My DD stopped napping around when she turned 2 then started needing it again after a couple of months.

DappledThings · 03/01/2020 13:13

4 in February and still does most days. Doesn't like to lie down deliberately but if he's in the car after 2.30 he'll conk out right away. Or sitting on a lap sometimes.

joffreyscoffees · 03/01/2020 13:22

DD is 18 months and I think we're quickly coming towards the end of nap times Sad

Xansaf · 06/01/2020 14:44

My daughter stopped napping at 19 months. One week she was having 2 hours a day and the next week, she just stopped! We just put her to bed earlier for a bit.

Pilot12 · 06/01/2020 15:05

18 months for my eldest and my seven month old will only have one nap in the afternoon 😂

Starlight39 · 06/01/2020 15:07

Never was a big fan of naps and I had to drop completely around 18 months as he'd be up till 10pm if he even had 20 mins! I think from 12-18 months we were on about an hour a day. He is now 7 and he doesn't ever fall asleep in the car even if we come home late at night. He's just not a big fan of sleep!

KevinsCarter · 06/01/2020 15:12

14 months started to fight and only napped occasionally. Stopped altogether at just under 2.

RhymingRabbit3 · 06/01/2020 15:24

Given that it coincided with a new bedroom, it sounds like that is the reason rather than really being ready to drop the nap.

How has he been for the last few days? If he's been really tired, irritable, falling asleep in his dinner, having to go to bed at 6pm etc. then he may still need the nap and it's probably worth persevering. If he has been fine without it, no reason not to drop it.

FWIW my daughter stopped regular naps at 2 years 6 months and stopped pretty much entirely at 2 years 9 months. Most of her friends are around the same.

TeenPlusTwenties · 06/01/2020 15:28

DD2 stopped daily napping at 2.5, but still napped about 1 in 3, especially if we were in the car after lunch.
Friends DD napped daily until she was very nearly 5!

We went for 'quiet time' after lunch when naps stopped. Either stories or a bit of TV.

feesh · 06/01/2020 15:44

All 3 of mine stopped at 2 years 4 months exactly, which is earlier than most of my friends’ kids. But would still fall asleep in the car if we go out until about 3/4 years old.

Keiki · 06/01/2020 15:50

DC1 is 5 and still naps if has had a busy day. DC2 is 1 and needs naps limiting already as it impacts the next day's wake up time. All different!
