7 yo sneaks food - advice needed

Does anyone else have a problem with their child sneaking sweet treats? I don't tend to have a lot of snacky stuff in the house for this very reason, but with it New Year I said we could have some treats in for a late night feast, 7 year old got to choose treats. cheesey wotsits, a box of malteasers and a small chocolate cake were bought for the occasion. When I was in the shower he ate the whole box of malteasers by himself and this morning I discovered the empty chocolate cake box behind the arm chair. Under the sofa cushion was full of crumbs and lumps of cake!! He had eaten the entire cake by himself. I don't deny him sweets and chocolate but let him have treats as just that, an occasional treat - chocolate bar after school, piece of cake after lunch, pancakes at weekend for breakfast, for example. I'm worried about the fact he hides this, I've found sweet wrappers behind his bed or behind sofa. I've told him time and again to just ask if he wants something and the chances are he will be allowed it, but not a whole effing cake at 8am. Any advice would be most welcome.

Before anyone suggests not having any biscuits/cake etc I don't feel that's the answer as i'd like him to be able to handle not sneaking the entire packet of biscuits, or half a box of chocolates i'd been given as a birthday present. plus he always finds something. Twice before I was confident I didn't have anything sweet or snacky in and he'd found a packet of jelly at the back of the cupboard and had eaten half before I found him. Same for dry cocoa powder....
