Newborn feeding but no poop

Hi all, my 5 day newborn has been feeding well, atleast every 1.5 hours but he hasn't pooped at all in past 24 hours and also wee'd only once in that time. Is it common or something is perhaps concerning ?

That's a concern. Especially the lack of wee. I would be concerned that although he is on the breast, milk transfer is not efficient. I would contact your midwife or HV if already discharged from the midwives.

Ditto - I’d have him checked and weighed ASAP to make sure he’s not losing too much of his birth weight. My baby fed all the time but wasn’t transferring milk well and had lost over 10% of his weight by day 4.

The not peeing is a concern take him to a&e.

PS I had been discharged by this point but we were told to go back to the post-labour ward at the hospital.

Your under midwifery care until your baby is 10 days old. Ring the postnatal ward or if you don’t have it the labour ward. You will need to go in and be checked, take bc a few essentials in case they want to go stay in for monitoring.

My DD is EBF and only poo's once every 5/6 days however has wet nappies constantly so there's no concern. She also surpassed her birth weight after 10 days after losing 9%.

Wouldn't stress over the lack of dirty nappies but would deffo have little one seen regarding no wet ones.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 25/12/2019 21:11

At this stage I would expect 3 to 5 yellow nappies plus several heavy wet nappies in 24 hours. What has the nappy output been up until now? Do your breasts feel full and heavy?

You do need to be seen to have a look at your feeding. It is fine for a breast fed baby to poo less often when a few weeks old but at this stage no poo suggests a feeding problem.

I'd call the maternity ward and ask for your dc to be checked over.
Breastfed babies sometimes don't poo for a few of days which can be normal but the not weeing is a red flag.

Hope everything's ok.

Thanks everyone for your support ! We headed straight to the A&E and although my wife was producing breast milk, it was no where enough to meet his requirements !
They have now kept us for the night with additional formula milk to be provided and support, thankfully we came before things got worse and he got dehydrated
Thanks a lot everyone for the guidance !
