I used to compartmentalise as a teenager - at my school most of my subjects were in English but I studied history and geography in French, and I could only ever talk about those subjects in French. You grow out of it eventually as/if your linguistic capabilities grow in both languages.

I have heard great things about the CNED - a friend of mine used it when she took her children out of school in France for a year and she thought it was excellent

Have not been back online since yesterday, but have checked, the best book I have read on the subject of bilingual upbringing is this one

I liked that she offered alternatives to the OPOL method. I found it very interesting and informative.

The other book that I read was this one, which was ok, but a bit repetitive. Both books look into other methods than OPOL.

As far as I can remember, Elke Montanari writes about which is the dominant language. I have loaned the book to our kindergarten teacher so cannot look it up at the moment.

kindersurprise: Thank you, both books seem to be very interesting.

This is also a brilliant book. To be honest, it's been my bible on rising children bilingually and made me feel sooooo much better about my children mixing languages and the like...
