I had some breaded chicken escalopes/steaks defrosting on a plate in the kitchen. My 5 year old just came into the front room and said that she wanted to try some and I said no because it wasn't cooked. She replied with well its too late I've already tried some. Gone out to kitchen and she's taken a whacking great big bite out of one of them!!
They were frozen on day of purchase and have been defrosting throughout the day at room temperature, should I be calling 111??!

Can't believe she's done it!! 🤦‍♀️

In my experience if there’s a problem it will manifest pretty quickly

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 17/12/2019 18:29

Nothing you can do about it now!

She may well be OK - it's important to cook chicken to kill common food poisoning bugs, that doesn't mean that all raw chicken has food poisoning bugs on it. You'll know soon enough though.

Hand hold. You will know soon.

Do you have any coke in the house? Probably an old wives tale but I’m sure I read somewhere once that drinking coke can kill off any possible bugs if you have it quickly afterwards.

I wouldn’t normally recommend a 5 yo drinking coke but if needs must.

I started an almost identical thread to this 1.5 years ago!! Found my 3 year old eating a raw chicken goujon he had swiped of the baking tray that was waiting to go in oven. I didn't do anything - he was fine. As others have said I'm sure you will soon find out!

Seeline · 17/12/2019 18:35

Were they actually raw when frozen, it pre-cooked?

nunnun · 17/12/2019 18:36

Is this another example of why we should all be vegan? No problems with raw vegetables is there?

teentree · 17/12/2019 18:39

No don't call 111, they can't do anything, it's a watch and wait situation.

Hopefully no sickness will come. It's not a definite.

Gemm83 · 17/12/2019 19:25

Thanks guys.... She said it was an accident!! 🤦‍♀️ It's been well over an hour now and she's bouncing around like normal!

My DP and DSS ate completely raw marinating chicken 2 weeks ago. I did panic tbh but also realised if they believed it would make them sick then they would be sick so I told them they ate the chicken alternative to gravlax. Both are fine and have not been ill.
Hope your little one is the same

puds11 · 17/12/2019 19:29

Not sure how true this is but I was told if the chicken was fresh it wasn’t a problem. My DD was served uncooked chicken in a restaurant and this is what the chef said when challenged so may be bullshit. DD was fine and no effect.

SmileyClare · 17/12/2019 19:44

I think that chef was talking b.s. puds but glad your Dd was ok.

There's always a salmonella risk with raw chicken: the risk is slightly higher with raw processed chicken.
However, a lot of breaded chicken products are cooked before being frozen and sold, thus low risk.

I'm surprised breaded chicken steaks needed defrosting? I oven cook them from frozen.

It's likely your Dd will be fine. Food poisoning comes on very quickly after eating.. however I would instil in her how dangerous it is to eat uncooked meat left out. She's still young so perhaps store it well out of reach if you think she can't resist it!

No.

Hope she’s ok OP!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 17/12/2019 20:07

Is this another example of why we should all be vegan?

Yeah cos no-one ever got ill from eating unwashed raw veg. Except that time when I did and was sick for two weeks.

puds11 · 17/12/2019 20:42

@nunnun actually you can get listeria from Mellon so...

Gemm83 · 17/12/2019 21:15

Thankyou all. She's gone to bed happy as Larry so fingers crossed all good 😊

bananahood · 17/12/2019 21:22

@nunnun I am vegan and still think your comment is ridiculous. Not massively helpful either.

Happyspud · 17/12/2019 21:25

Husband did the same. No issues.

Ellapaella · 17/12/2019 21:27

It'll be 24-48 hours or more before she's likely to get any symptoms.

Aardvarkitsabloodyaardvark · 17/12/2019 21:29

Nunnun that is rediculous. Please Google food poisoning from veg. Ffs if you want to prove veganisn is best at least know what you are talking about.

custardbear · 17/12/2019 21:33

@nunnun - yep, one of those goody fucker vegans that damage vegan reputations 🙄

ReggieLedoux · 17/12/2019 21:40

Campylobacter is very prevalent in raw chicken unfortunately. Hoping your child is okay
