7 month old biting whilst breast feeding! what does this mean?

I have a 2year old and a 7 month old and have reast fed them both. My 7th month old has recently started biting whilst feeding (quite hard). Is this just teething or a sign that he does not want to be breast fed anymore. He does not always do this but be every other day he might. Any advice.

Could be teething. My ds2 did this recently but now he has 2 teeth through he's stopped.

Ouch, I feel for you...I don't think it's a sign that they don't want to feed anymore, I think they just do it because they're getting teeth and can! My DS bit a few times but carried on. He made it clear he was ready to stop BF by refusing to latch on, laughing and crawling off!

Stick with it, its probably a phase...

I had to give up breast feeding my daughter at a few months old because she would 'wrag' her head back and forth and almost pull my (very long, red-raw, stretched) nipple off!! I came to the conclusion that she wasn't getting full-up enough from me and went onto bottles. It might be teething, it might be he is not getting enough. Bloody painful though isn't it!

thank you! he has 2 bottom teeth already so msybe it is teething. Want to carry on bf until he is 1 if i can, even if it is just 1 or 2 feeds a day. thanks again

My 7mo does this too. Don't know why but it bloomin' hurts and he doesn't have teeth yet, i'm dreading when that day finally comes!

I would very much doubt it's because he doesn't want to bf. He's probably just playing and likes the sensation and the big scream he gets from you , mine certainly does. Babies do have very sensitive mouths (hence shoving anything and everything in there!) so it could be that he's experimenting with how his mouth works.

I bet you'll get loads of people saying 'yes, mine bit too', in fact, there used to be a regular thread that was devoted to it, so you're definitely not alone.

today for example he started biting as soon as i started feeding him. i know i produce quite a lot of milk as my boobs always feel full inflated. (dreading stopping as they will shrivel to small prunes!

haha...if it makes you feel any better, DS stopped about 4 weeks ago, and mine don't look that bad to be honest! I am pleasantly surprised! (Or perhaps selectively blind!)

DD1 bit me a very few times only in 12 months of bfeeding. Dd2 bit me LOADS, little madam. Each time I swore I would have to stop, but I never got around to buying any bottles etc and didn't really want to stop bfeeding so plodded on. I used to pull her in to me so she couldn't breathe and had to open her mouth and then she would be put down and have to wait a short while (while I recovered) before I fed her again. She got the message eventually and I fed her for 13 months in the end. She teethed earlier and quicker so this might be a factor. Good Luck.

I haven't read the other replies - and you must forgive me if this is a little flippant and not very helpful.....but the first thing that sprang to mind when I saw the thread title was

"It means they've got/getting teeth"

More likely teething than a "sign" of anything else. he doesn;t know that it hurts you , he may know it gets you to make a funn ( to him) noise, or it gets you to "notice him". If hes doing it at or near the end of a feed try stopping that feed as soon as he bites ( and with out screaming if you can!). If its at teh start you could try taking him off, sitting him up for a minute or two but NOT playing with him or "rewarding" him before trying again. I did both with my biting 5-6 month old, each time he would try it for a few days with his newly through teeth then get teh message and stop. My personal hunch is that he didn;t quite know where his teeth were while they were cutting and needed to learn a new jaw position each time.

my baby nipped me, but i just make sure he has his head tipped back a bit and is down from my boob a bit, and really has a big mouthful of breast and he hasn't done it since. he has his bottom teeth which are v sharp! good luck!
