Baby still putting everything in mouth

I have an 8mo DS. He has always put everything in his mouth. I understand that this is a way of learning the environment around him and that a lot of babies do it. However, at 8 months old, he shows no signs of stopping this and it is becoming quite frustrating. If we read a book he spends the whole time trying to prize it off me to chew it. Same with any toys/household objects etc. I find that I set up games/activities only to despair 2 minutes later as he won't engage with any of it apart from putting it in his mouth. I see friends babies of the same age turning book pages and playing games. Anyone else have/had a baby like this....when did it stop?!

Babies that age learn through mouthing and chewing plus with teething it relieves gum pain. Completely normal and actually damaging if babies aren't allowed to mouth. Have a read about the oral stage in babies to put your mind at rest Smile

I do let him chew most of what he is trying to (stopped him with the baubles earlier though!). It is just frustrating that I feel like we don't necessarily have any interaction with a lot of activities as he is only focused on chewing things.

But that IS interaction,it's exactly what should be happening. It's many years since I did child development but remember having to write pages about it. He's a tiny baby still, he's doing just what he should be doing and so are you by the sounds of things.

Bath books are good as he can chew them while you read Smile

Just go with it - he’ll start engaging in other ways eventually! My 8 month old has only just stopped doing that (she still puts most things in her mouth, just not everything). I used to give her something to chew on while I read to her so I could get through a book without her grabbing it to bite it!

My boy is 8.5 months and puts EVERYTHING in his mouth. Just when I think he’s vaguely interested in something I realise he’s just trying to get it into his mouth.
This morning he chewed on my hoody tassels for 20 minutes while I ‘read him a book’ (read to myself)
I presume it’s normal!

Thanks ladies! I think this was just a very frustrating day where the only thing he wouldn't put in his mouth was his lovingly prepared lunch. Guess I just have to hope it fizzles out at some point!

My DS has just turned 1 and everything is still in the mouth. At playgroups we have to bypass the play dough table, crayons and paint as it all just goes in the mouth. Whilst it can be frustrating at times, most of the time it can be quite funny and we take lots of funny photos of him chewing the most random things. It will pass and they grow up too fast x

Ewanismydreamsheep · 11/12/2019 07:52

My little boy has just turned one and still puts most things in his mouth. He does play with things before they go in a lot more now though and it’s worse when he’s teething. I think some babies like to chew more than others but they all eventually do it less.

My little girl is nearly 8 months and everything is also in her mouth too! She even chewed up my shopping list in the supermarket the other day which she pulled out of my bag.
So no real help but I know the frustration - “let’s look at this toy, ooh she really likes...oh no just wanted a chew.”. Also has many a tantrum if the thing she is interested in chewing doesn’t fit well in her mouth 🙃

Browniee · 11/12/2019 13:40

@NewMum293 - I’m going to try this tonight so we can try and get through a bed time story without the book getting gummed!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/12/2019 13:43

It really isn't important to finish a story at 8 months, try singing a song instead or just have a cuddle while he chews the book.

Nonnymum · 11/12/2019 13:47

He will be doing this for many months more, even some. 2 year old put things they shouldn't in their mouths
