Hey so my 15mo has had this horrible cough for a couple days and snotty nose, she refuses to eat anything and when she does she throws it all back up or heaves :( she doesn't have a temp but I'm so worried cos she won't eat anything she's still drinking milk/water. Been to gp and he said it's just a cold, has anyone else experienced this any advice??

Could it be tonsillitis? If she’s being sick it could just be where she’s struggling with her blocked nose to breath when she’s eating x

Bol87 · 27/11/2019 21:26

Poor babby, sounds rough. But also nothing to worry about it!

My daughter has constant coughs, colds, throwing up from coughing, ear ache, temperatures.. she brings it all back from nursery!

They really do lose their appetites when poorly. Think about how you feel with a heavy cold & cough. You feel dreadful. Just make sure she’s drinking plenty & if she’ll accept milk then great for some calories & vitamins. Give her calpol regularly - again, think how you feel with a heavy cold. I take cold & flu tablets all day long to alleviate some of the aches, pains & general horrible-ness! She may have a really sore throat from the coughing, maybe offer some ice cream or yoghurt?

The one thing I’ve learnt over the past 2.5 years is to trust my daughters appetite. She knows when she’s hungry and when she’s not. Obviously, if it continues for over a week, maybe take her back to the docs for another check but sounds like any infections have been ruled out for now!

Hope she’s feeling much better soon!

So she woke herself up being sick everywhere :( won't take milk but took a lot of water and she seemed back to her usual self!! She's sleeping now fingers crossed she's on the mend, thanks for the advice Smile

It sounds like this awful infection that is doing the rounds, my 15 year old ds is exactly the same, horrid cough, won't eat because every time he does he throws up, we have been to the doctors twice only to be told it was just a virus, it clears up & then 10 days later comes back, we had to go to out of hours last Sunday & he now has a bad chest infection & is on antibiotics & inhalers.

butterfly193 · 28/11/2019 00:30

I thought chest infection at first but doctor said chest was clear Hmmthink I'll take her tomorrow if she's still as bad.

Babies can’t blow their noses so they end up swallowing a load of snot which makes them feel sick and tummy achey. I bought a snot sucker, it really helps to clear the sinuses especially after a steamy shower. DS hates it bless him, I have to pin him down because he doesn’t understand it’s helping him. Lots of fluids, avoid dairy and especially chocolate because it makes the congestion worse.

suchasoftersin · 28/11/2019 00:40

My 3 year old DD has been the same. Awful cough (doctor also said chest was clear), snotty and vomiting. Apparently it is a really nasty sickness bug that is also causing respiratory symptoms. She also seemed to be sick more frequently during the night than the day. The vomiting lasted for 7 days. The cough is currently ongoing.

Bol87 · 28/11/2019 21:01

You’d honestly think my daughter had a chest infection every week. She never stops coughing in winter, it’s crazy. But her chest is clear 99% of the time. My doctor is lovely & always tells me to bring her for a check! She says it’s because they can’t blow their little noses and so get really congested. The snot makes them sound really chesty. Always worth checking out if you are worried but it my vast experience of toddler coughs, it’s usually viral!

Saltdoughmuncher · 28/11/2019 21:04

@ Bol87 my 2 are exactly the same! The amount of times I’ve taken them to the GP thinking it’s a chest infection because they sound really rattly!

PersianStar · 28/11/2019 21:12

We’ve had this since Friday. Ended up being sent to A&E on Tuesday night with DD1 because of high temp/low oxygen but told chest was clear. Took her to the doctors again today as she’s still not getting any better and they’ve finally decided she has a chest infection.
Today was our 4th visit to see someone since Friday but I was sure something just wasn’t right so definitely worth persevering if you feel the need.
It helped that the doctor today was lovely and really put my mind at rest that I’m not just an over anxious FTM.
It really is hard to watch them be so poorly and not be able to help them. Hope they feel better soon

Sipperskipper · 28/11/2019 21:19

I think my 2.5 year old DD has this exact thing! I can count on one hand the amount of times she’s been sick in her life, but she’s thrown up 5 times today. It seems sort of cough / food related - like her gag reflex is really sensitive or something.

The cough is awful - not really chesty just constant, like she can’t clear it. A couple of times she has been sick from the cough. I can hear her coughing on the monitor now. Her temp has been 39.5 at times today, but has settled with calpol / ibuprofen.

She’s got her vaporiser going full pelt in her room which usually helps any cough / cold she has, but doesn’t seem to be touching this one.

butterfly193 · 28/11/2019 22:01

She's been sick loads again today and still not eating so taking her to doctors tomorrow. The snotty nose definitely makes it sound worse as we used saline drops and it cleared for a while!

We are going back to the doctors tomorrow, ds hasn't been out of bed for more than 2 hours all week.

Nat6999 · 29/11/2019 21:50

Ds has been prescribed another course of antibiotics & steroids for a week. It was a farce at the doctors, we had to see a physician associate, took 1hour 15 minutes for her to deal with ds & then me. I had lost the will to live by the time we got out.

Sipperskipper · 30/11/2019 07:56

Took DD to the doctors yesterday evening & she’s been started on antibiotics for a chest infection. Glad I wasn’t going mad - DD has millions of coughs but this one has been different.

Hope everyone feels better soon!

Saltdoughmuncher · 30/11/2019 08:16

We are waiting at out of hours now after 111 made the appointment for us. DS is now obviously running round a picture of health at the minute!

butterfly193 · 30/11/2019 08:23

We went to gp but he said just to keep an eye on her but she's still being sick and got a horrible cough hate seeing her like this 😞

@butterfly193 what came of this? Going through the same :-(

Timeturnerplease · 24/10/2021 20:24

Could it be tonsillitis? DD1 (2.11) has been ill on and off for two weeks with temp, snotty nose and hacking cough. Been her usual bouncy self apart from the first day or so, so we didn’t think anything of it, but my mum came to stay last weekend, went home and two days later was diagnosed with tonsillitis and has been on the sofa since! GP told her it’s been doing the rounds at nurseries etc, but that the older toddlers seem to be able to fight it off ok…

Timeturnerplease · 24/10/2021 20:26

Ah realised this is old, ignore me! Wonder if it was early covid though….

butterfly193 · 25/10/2021 08:25

@Timeturnerplease I thought the same about Covid Hmm

@butterfly193 ha ha brilliant, glad to hear it! We are on day 8 with not much improvement... DD ok in herself but just horrid barking cough. Hoping it does one soon.
