Four week old breastfeeding slowed down

Baby was feeding fairly constantly for first three weeks but in the last few days it has really settled down over the last couple of days. Baby now feeds for between 5-10 mins at a time, couple of times in the morning, early afternoon, then a couple of times at night. Through night she is only waking once or twice for a feed, again no longer than 15 mins. Is this too infrequent for this early on?

Hi OP

As your baby grows they will get more efficient at feeding drinking more in a shorter time and they will also go through phases where they are more / less hungry and when they feed more or less for comfort.

What you describe mostly sounds pretty typical to me. Sounds like they are feeding for 10 mins or so every few hours and a couple of times overnight. There does seem to be a long gap between 'early afternoon' and night feeds. Do you offer your baby milk during this time?

At 4 weeks I imagine your baby is still being weighed pretty regularly? As long as they are steadily growing they are fine.

Trust your baby -- it sounds like you're doing a great job... and enjoy this phase. You may very well soon go back to constant feeding again!

Obviously if you are worried though speak to your health visitor, breastfeeding group or go to the GP. They are there to help and I'm not a professional!
